OT - Router
« on: November 22, 2002, 05:20:35 pm »

I need to replace my Ethernet hub with a router, so I can share my cable modem connection with a 2nd PC.  I'll have one Win2kPro system and one WinXP system on the LAN.  Both are laptops, and will occasionally be pulled off.  I also will occasionally (very seldom) attach one or two Unix workstations to the LAN, to ftp files from them.  I've been looking at the D-Link DI-604 and Netgear RP614, both very cheap and loaded with functionality.  Any experience, commentary, flaming, or belly-aching?  Feel free to unload...

Hi Scronch

I have the Netgear rp114.

Win xp (mine)and Win ME (Daughter)attached to it.

Not one problem, with DSL or pulling files back and forth, or anything.

Good product.

Thanks, Griff.  I've read that the RP614 is mostly a low-priced repackaging of the 114.  I'm curious if there's any bad press out there about the DI-604, because it's available for 30 bucks after rebate!  I've read the online reviews, but they're mostly anecdotal (I suppose like I'll get here...).

Hi again Scronch

Did a quick search on the 604 and:

Street price $39.00

And I also found this:

Quote
There's no support for uplink capability, so you'll need to depend on having it in whatever you use to expand the number of ports (if four aren't enough), or use a crossover cable. The 604 also doesn't support dialup modem or ISDN WAN connections, since it has only a 10BaseT Ethernet WAN connector

The only thing I can tell you about D-Link is their tech support is worth very much.

Good luck

I'm confused. Why do you need to replace your hub with a router just to add more systems? Most hubs have at least 4 connections that you can use.

Routers are used when you have different networks that need to talk to each other. For example: network 1 is development, network 2 is support, and network 3 is the Internet (the rest of the world). You need a router so that people on network 1 can talk to both network 2 and the Internet without problem (and vice versa for network 2).

Hi John -

Glad to see you're having as wild a Friday night as I am.

The hub has no Internet address.  A router does.  So with a router, I can attach both PC's to surf the net or access email, and not pay the extra $10 per month for another IP address.  My cable ISP openly tells us that.

Does that make sense?

Hi John

Maybe I am wrong but:

I think what Scronch wants is to be able to remove any pc and still have the other connect.

With a Hub, you have to have one pc connected at all times for the other pc"s to go thru to connect.

Scrooch,

Ya can't beat a LinkSys Cable/DSL router (~$50). Setup was easy and nearly automatic. Set up one at my brothers. He has a mix of PC's and iMac's (with Airport LAN). It has been fault free for months now.

PS: It is a switch (faster than a hub), too.

Xeeen -

Another wild one on a Friday.  Go figure.

Is the Linksys a "hardware firewall"?  D-Link and Netgear seem to make a big deal out of that.

I dont think I would worry about that.

There is a lot of software out to take care of that.

If I spelled anything wrong , Its either my keyboard, me or the 4 beers

Griff....where you been hiding? About time I had someone watching my back. Steelers 4 ever!

"Packer Country" is really just a small isolated island in the upper midwest - I think in the western end of Lake Superior. Real easy to miss if you have a fast rowboat.

The LinkSys has NAT (Network Address Translation) which provides good security.

Xen, no, it's a bay along the western shore of Lake Michigan.  Not even on Superior.  The map below may help you.

Griff, I think that's the result of drinking ANY Pittsburgh beer!

Scrooch....

They only play in Green Bay because the "Country" is not large
enough for both a stadium AND the few fans that live there.

Ahem, you once again show your lack of NFL knowledge.  Let me assist.

Entering 2002, Lambeau Field has been sold out on a season-ticket basis 42 straight years, for 278 consecutive non-strike games (62 preseason, 205 regular season and 11 postseason), beginning with the 1960 opener vs. the Chicago Bears.  The current waiting list is more than 57,000; the Packers tell fans adding their names that the wait averages 30 years.

More jealousy-generating info:

The NFL's longest-tenured facility, Lambeau easily ranks as one of the most recognized and envied locales in all of sports, a fact recognized in 1999 when Sports Illustrated named it the eighth-best venue in the world to watch sports - and the lone NFL stadium to make the magazine's list of 20. Even with the ongoing changes, Lambeau maintains its nostalgic and intimate feel with totally unobstructed sightlines. Permeated by history, tradition and mystique, the view from inside can be awe-inspiring.

Lambeau Field, now in its 46th NFL season, is the longest continuously-occupied stadium in the league - 10 years more than the next-closest venue, Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego at 36 years. In pro sports as a whole, only the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park (91 seasons) and the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field (89 seasons) have longer active homefield tenures.

Q: How many people does it take to change a light bulb at Lambeau Field?
A: Three. One to change it and two to talk about how good the old one was.

Oh, lest we forget:

The Green Bay Packers have won more championships - 12 - than any other team in National Football League history.
Green Bay also is the only NFL team to win three straight titles, having done it twice.

Now you know.  When you are ready to become a fan of the greatest NFL team in history, you know where I am.

A Packer fan was enjoying himself at the game in a packed Lambeau Field, until he noticed an empty seat down in front. He went down and asked the guy next to it if he knew whose seat it was. The guy said, "Yes, that's my wife's seat. We have never missed a game since 1957, but now my wife is dead." The fan offered his sympathy and said it was really too bad he couldn't find some relative to give the ticket to and enjoy the game together. "Oh no," the guy said, "they're all at the funeral."
