Media Center 10.0.98 beta available
« on: March 24, 2004, 04:00:01 pm »

This is in late beta.  It may still have problems.

Please reserve this thread for bugs.  If you're not sure whether it's a bug, or you need to ask a question, please start a new thread.

Please check the license and price thread before you download:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=17336

The latest beta of 10 is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter10098.exe

10.0.98 (3/24/04)
1. Fixed: Auto-size of single columns manually (by double-clicking column divider) could cause a crash.
2. Fixed: Visualization Studio > Dynamic Transform wouldn't properly save 'friendly-mode' equation changes.
3. Changed: During uploading of WMA files with no rights, MC will show a message box with Artist - Album - Name information instead of Filename.
4. Changed: Switching Media Modes collapses the tree.
5. Changed: Changing Theater View skins updates immediately. (instead of after leaving and returning to fullscreen mode)
6. Fixed: MC was not writing WMA tags.
7. Changed: MC only shows status / cover art for a video when opening after a little delay, so it won't flash between videos.
8. Fixed: Download Manager would crash on startup on Win98/Me. (Please test it on WinMe though!)
9. Fixed: The "All Downloads Are Finished" notification message box would cause crash in some rare occasions.
10. Fixed: The "All Downloads Are Finished" notification message box would sometimes not self destruct (timer would not work).

Problem with m4a files.
I have a large collection with m4a files from iTunes on a Mac.
I'm very happy that version 10 can actually read the tags in these files  :), but...
the images stored in the m4a files are not found at all.

It'd be great to see the image beside the tags....

Well I finally used the cd maker function. It is VERY easy to use...

There is a small problem though, I can see the status line go up, but the burning now track, doesn't change??

Please post your system info. Are you burning a data or audio mode CD? How many tracks? Does it show the first track for the entire burn process?

Thanks,
John T.

BUG: Vis Studio - Cover art doesn't always change if OnEquation is set to something complicated. See this thread

Autopan requests:
- It often starts zoomed right in by about 1000%. An option like "Maximum zoom =" would be nice. I'd like something that just did slow, small zooms.
- AutoPan should be an option in Configure Image Playback so that I could have it happen for all slideshows.
- It does the autopan, then starts the slideshow timer. An autopan can take 15 seconds, so there is no way to make your slideshow snappier than this. The timer should run during the autopan
- On my 1.7Ghz P4 running at 1600x1200x32, zooms are pretty slow. Could they be accellerated using the 3D hardware?

ThunderStorm skin comment:

The little check boxes in the options aren't obvious enough when they're checked.  It's not that you can't tell if it's checked when you look at it -- it's just that a check should stand out more.  The boxes are two-toned (dark on the botton and light on top), and since the checks are simply white, they "blend" into the box rather than standing out.  This is especially true at high resolutions where the boxes are really small.  Checked boxes should distinctly contrast non-checked boxes.

The result is that with this skin, it's just a little more difficult to scan a page and immediately see what's checked and what's not.  It seems like it would be better to either make the box a solid color, or to make the check a totally different color -- i.e. red for example -- so that checked boxes really show up amongst non checked ones.

MC won't copy photos to a Compact Flash card, despite giving every indication that the files will be copied.

Here are some specifics, mentioned is previous thread on handheld support: I have a 128MB CF card which is inserted into a card reader attached to my PC. It is a multicard reader so four drives show up in explorer. But only the drive with a card in it shows up in MC (at least when Enable Support for WMDM Devices is UNchecked-- when it's checked all four drives show up).

I can copy music files to the CF card just fine-- either by dragging them to the Handheld Player window or to Drive N under Drives and Devices in the main tree. Under both methods, dragging files adds them to a list, which I can transfer by hitting the Transfer button.

I have tried using the same procedure to transfer photos as well. Everything works until I hit the Transfer button. It asks me if I want to tranfer 3 files; I click yes. The queue of files is cleared, but nothing is transferred and no explanation is given.

Therefore several comments/bugs (albeit not showstoppers):

1. I understand that per SteveG's reply in a different thread that MC does not support transferring files other than audio files. If it is not supported, MC should say so and not let me queue files to be transfered.

2. SteveG indicated that support for this would be revisted this week. I strongly urge you to support these types of transfers. I use them for moving photos to a CF card to take to a drug store to print, but as multimedia players become more prevalent, I'm sure people will want to transfer multiple types of media to them.

3. This mean that copying non-audio files in the drives and devices tree isn't allowed either-- which is extremely strange behavior.

4. Inconsistent behavior: Drives without card media inserted only show up when Enable Support for WMDM Devices is checked.

Something that has bugged me about MC for quite a while is the way it always switches the time display to the new track before the current track is done playing.  What is the logic behind this?  Why not have it count up to the total running time, or down to zero for the remaining time?  The way it is now, I can never tell where I am in that last 6 or so seconds of a track, which basically makes the time indicator totally useless during this last 6 seconds of a track.

Is there a way to change the way MC does this that I don't know about?  Is there any way to tell MC to make the counter just stick with the current track -- both count up and count down times -- until it's done?  This obviously isn't that big of a deal, but I just ran into a situation where this actually got in the way of what I was trying to do.

Thanks,

Larry

The 3D visualizations "text" and "starscope" (and possibly one or two others) are still real buggy on my systems -- I often get solid black or grey 3D objects instead of the album art properly wrapping around the objects.  I have NEVER had a problem with most of the other 3D choices (i.e. cube, particles, and a couple others) so this seems to be a bug with MC.

I'd like to get the "old" version of the "auto-size column" feature back -- I am getting too many tracks cut off and I end up having to re-size the columns all the time even with this feature active.  Maybe we could choose the way it auto sizes -- i.e. allow for a selectable maximum width for the tracks with obsenely long names.

The "Set Root Directory" function in the Handheld plugin doesn't work. No matter what I put in there, all my file's folder hierarchys start at the root of the handheld instead of where I told it to start.

This was working several builds ago.

On a related note, it would also be nice if the text didn't get so much "bigger" when playing a track.  It's a bit annoying that a track that's playing is usually not visible due the fact that the bolded text gets pushed out of the visible part of any given column.  Perhaps another method of showing the currently playing track -- maybe outlining the track with a thin but visible line around the row-- would work better.

jgourd,

Are you synching or drag and dropping the files? The root directory option is designed for synching.

When a single short-duration (>1 sec) audio track is in the playlist and playback is set to Continuous, MC locks up in a playback loop and must be killed through the Task manager.  It is not possible to stop playback, or even close the app from the app window.  My guess is that MC is probably doing something at the end of playback that is actually longer than the duration of the file itself and never opening up to user input.

Also:

I also still wish that MC's installer would remember whether I want it to install the desktop and menu shortcuts.  I'd like to let it autoinstall every time I update, but it's annoying to have to delete the unwanted shortcuts every time.

1. Fixed: Auto-size of single columns manually (by double-clicking column divider) could cause a crash.

The crash no longer occurs, but when I double click to do a column auto-size, it doesn't auto-size correctly.  That is, the column enlarges, but the "..." is still shown.  Sometimes, the column actually shrinks instead of growing.
