Stream music to family
« on: May 26, 2004, 12:11:57 pm »

I couldn't find this answer anywhere (probably to my lack of searching skills) so I'll post it anyway.

I'd like to stream what's playing on my system to my family. Assuming I have the proper network connectivity that I need. Is there any way to do this without having my entire family have MC installed (i.e. with Winamp or another capable player)?

Thanks in advance!

The only way to play music in another location is to use MC's Media Server on the server side and the same version of MC on the client side.

So if I marry your sister, what kind of music can I look forward to? I don't like New/Pop Country or Rap. The dowery is negotiable.

Are these machines all locally connected (on a LAN....vs WAN)? MC streams only to itself...and requires same version on client side. If they're all in the same household (LAN) then I don't think JRiver would have a problem with using the same license for all. If they're WAN'd, then you'll need more registered MC's or stick with WinAmp.

They would all have internet connections (cable) at their own locations. I suppose they could all buy their own MC license but they wouldn't really be getting a streaming station, they would just pick their own music, which is not what I want.

I guess I'll have to export lists from MC and load them into a shoutcast or similar set up.

P.S.  If you were to marry my sister you would have to move to a frosty city in the middle of Alaska.

OK, this is not exactly what you were asking...

Unless you are using multiple zones feature or need synching (MC to MC), then I would set up a shoutcast stream from one PC and use MC to listen on your machine (the same one that is streaming), and maybe Winamp or MC to listen on others.  I *think* that that will work, but it is probably more overhead processor-wise on your machine.

When I get my server setup, I plan on hooking up an XM radio to it and piping it out to shoutcast.  Then for all of the mp3 files stored on the machine I will create genre playlists that remote PCs can click on and it will all automatically load into either MC or WinAmp (like building my own local radio stations for the house).  Additionally I will have the mp3 top level directory shared out so that throughout the house you can pick and choose songs, artists, albums, etc.
