POLL: CUE File Support
« on: August 16, 2004, 01:52:38 pm »

I'd like to see CUE file support in MC. Playback, recording, ripping, etc. With all else that has been put into MC, I'm curious to see if there is demand for this ability.

Cuesheets are ASCII files basically used to define all of the selections contained on the CD and the starting time of each track/index..

This allows gapless/seamless playback of the indivdual selections, let's you play a single selection from within the large complete file, and in use with a good mediaplayer, allows you to convert a few selections to seperate files in a different format for use n your portable, etc.

Why? Well for clasical music  there are not clear 'tracks'. For me, sometimes you want to hear Dark Side of the Moon complete. A good way to not have annoying gaps when the selection changes is to rip as one large file (in my case APE). But there are other times you just want to hear Us and Them. CUE file support enables this.

This method:
DSOTM.APE
DSOTM.CUE
Those are the only files needed in the directory.
I can listen to the whole album, or use the cue file to listen to a single selection.

Current method. Only works with APE format.
DSOTM.APE
Pink Floyd - 01 - Speak to MeBreathe.apl
Pink Floyd - 02 - On the Run.apl
Pink Floyd - 03 - Time.apl
Pink Floyd - 04 - The Great Gig in the Sky.apl
Pink Floyd - 05 - Money.apl
Pink Floyd - 06 - Us and Them.apl
Pink Floyd - 07 - Any Colour You Like.apl
Pink Floyd - 08 - Brain Damage.apl
Pink Floyd - 09 - Eclipse.apl

For APE files, either method works, the cue has the advantage of a single file per CD however.

The current method will not work for MP3, FLAC, OGG, etc.

I'd almost go so far as to say that CUE file support is the one last thing I really need MC to do to be complete for me.  When it comes to live recordings, classical music in movements, DJ mixes, or even just albums that have songs that flow one into the other, CUE files are indispensible.  Right now, I just deal with trying to cue it up to the right place by hand if I want to listen to a particular track on an album that I've ripped as a single MP3 or APE.

Nice editing job.

I certainly didn't see the need for more than the original 3 possibilities.

>Don't know, don't care
No, I think covers this one.

>What is cuefile support?
If someone does not know, likely won't vote. Or could just read the associated post.

>Pong meant more to me
Obviously.

Polls like this aren't fair.  People will always say "sure, I'll take that too."  You need to put in some trade-offs.

Wrong: Would you like one million dollars?
[ ] Yes
[ ] No

Right: "Would you like one million dollars or to keep both kneecaps?"
[ ] $$$
[ ] My kneecaps

This is a good point and also a good place for the developers to step in and say what they think about CUE support.  Right now, we don't know what the trade-offs would be with the addition of CUE support.  Would we actually lose some other functionality?  Is it something so complex that it will cause you guys to have to put off developing other parts of the software, parts which you might consider more important to the general user?  (I, for one, fully acknowledge that the majority of users probably don't care about CUE support.)

Well, I'm casting my yes vote and I'm sure that Matt knows that I've been asking for this since version 8 was still in beta. :P

And when I say full support, I mean that I want MC to be able to rip to APE+CUE. I don't really care if it eliminates the need for APL files as long as I can stop using EAC to rip and burn to/from CUE sheets.

I only really care about cue playback but if MC had complete cue support for ripping/burning, I might ditch EAC.

And I care more about ripping than playback (though if cue files worked for playback, I'd certainly use them).  I know I can use EAC to do the ripping, but it's tedious.  At least it's my impression that if I have a whole disk of preludes and fugues and want to rip the tracks in pairs, I have to do n/2 operations of "Copy Range" in EAC, setting little sliders to the track boundaries I want each time.  Way too low-level.  In iTunes all I have to do is click on each of the n/2 pairs to group them and then just let it rip (but since it's not a secure rip, I'm not interested).  That's the kind of interface I'd like to see in MC.

Currently, i'm forced to use Winamp to playback my .cue files.  lack of .cue support is the only reason i have to go outside MC for playback of my audio files.  Winamp allows me to see the filenames and jump from track to track with a cue viewer plugin.

I would love this capability in MC so i can finally uninstall winamp from my system for good.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's on J River's list of features-to-add.  At this point, I think they're probably weighing how high of a priority they should make it.  If a ton of people are screaming for it (and, sadly, 24 isn't a ton), they might move it up the priority list.  If it's just a handful of users, it'll stay toward the bottom where I imagine it is now.

Sadly i have to agree.. after asking for nearly a yr now...i'm giving up. There will never be time to implement CUE with all the other things they want to do.

FB2K it is for cue. FB2K does not have a library at the moment, but we shall see in a cpl of iterations ;)

Hi Guys !

I'm new on this forum :)

About *.cue files support i think this is necessary. Lots of people want to can select tracks they play on long sessions...
DJ Session addict, it's an option that i would frequently use if it'd be added.

JR MC is a complete audio solution, so it must be as complete as possible... And complete support of standards is one of the way that must be primary followed...

Current method. Only works with APE format.
DSOTM.APE
Pink Floyd - 01 - Speak to MeBreathe.apl
Pink Floyd - 02 - On the Run.apl
Pink Floyd - 03 - Time.apl
Pink Floyd - 04 - The Great Gig in the Sky.apl
Pink Floyd - 05 - Money.apl
Pink Floyd - 06 - Us and Them.apl
Pink Floyd - 07 - Any Colour You Like.apl
Pink Floyd - 08 - Brain Damage.apl
Pink Floyd - 09 - Eclipse.apl
...

I have them. I have also this:

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon (full album).mp3  [42 min 58 sec, 61.1 MB]

It is not possible to use APL method with Media Server. A full album APE is too much even with a 100 mbit LAN. So when I am on the client side I listen to full album MP3s and use .apl files as crib sheets.

This appears to be Media Server issue. Larry has mentioned it here

i suppose the workaround is to use is network folders. One should not be forced to chop up an album cos the player can't handle it.

Cue file support was added in 11.0.66.

For playback, anyway.  Presumably you have to have produced the cue files outside of MC.  Care to share any hints on when we can expect MC's ripper to produce them (and of course offer the option of aggregating tracks)?

Nice to see the progress, though.

Oh WOW !!! Just checked the calendar and notice it isnt April 1 :)

Quote
1. NEW: Added CUE file playback support of individual tracks. (note the sample-accurate MP3 seeking below)
2. NEW: MP3 plugin uses sample-accurate seeking for all seeks.
3. NEW: Improved playback range / seeking system inside player / decoder core to be sample-accurate everywhere.

The words sample-accurate are music to my ears.

Now i have a dilemma. Is it safe to move to 11 ?

Is Audio Analysis possible on tracks within a cue ?

Does a Locate->Artist/Trackname show all occurrences of a track whether in a cue file or otherwise ?

Is it possible to right-click a track in the cue and send to playing now ?

No idea what "Sample accurate" implies, so can't test it.

CUE fies are not usable unless they contain a complete path to the target file.

I have added cover art to sellections from a CUE file.
I also did an audio analysis. Both worked. No changes written to the CUE or to the APE file. I imagine the info is stored in the database, as it should be in my opinion.

So, yeah, while needing tweaks (it's a alpha/beta after all), MC 11 is ok in my usage.

And now, since the support is there, all additional questions and comments should go into the MC 11 threads I think.
