JRSS 2.0
« on: April 20, 2004, 03:41:16 pm »

Hi all,
Decided to enable JRSS 2.0 to provide 4 channel sound (Tools/Options/Playback/DSPStudio/Channels).  Sounds good. However, frequently when it skips to the next track, the front and rear channels switch so all vocals come from my nasty poor quality rears. In fact it appears to toggles - one song correct, one song wrong ?

Any ideas??

I have MC10 build 117.
Sound Card is Hercules GameTheatre XP.

Thanks in advance :)

If you play the same song over and over, does it sound different each time?

If you seek, does that ever cause a problem?

Does disabling cross-fading make any difference?

Thanks,

Hi Matt,

I've run a few tests and heres what I've discovered:

Yesterday
- If I let the tracks run and cross-fade, the problem occurs
- If I manually skip tracks, the problem occurs
- If I add one song to Playing Now, and let it play over and over, the problem occurs
- If I add one song to Playing Now and skip to the 'next track', the problem occurs
- Changed cross-fade option to Standard and had same problem

Today
- All is fine- I haven't restarted since yesterdays tests.
      - No matter what cross-fade method used
      - Tried Going back to Stereo and then back to JRSS 2.0 but all is still fine
      - Repeated all above tests - still all fine.

Not sure whats going on really - next time it occurs I'll do a more comprehensive set of tests

Thanks for your help

Hi again,

It's done it again.
A few more tests have lead me to believe this only occurs with VBR MP3's.
Removing crossfading does not correct the problem

With No Crossfade (gapless)
- Skipping between VBR tracks = no prob
- Allowing VBR tracks to run and change = problem occurs
- When speakers have "flipped", seeking to another part of the track corrects it

With Crossfade (aggressive)
- Skipping between VBR tracks = no prob
- Allowing VBR tracks to run and change = problem occurs
- When speakers have "flipped", seeking to another part of the track corrects it

Restarted MC to confirm consistant operation - same results as above.

Hope this helps

Phil :)

The same thing is happening for me.  I was thinking perhaps this was an intended 'feature'.  Song on front speakers fades out as new song fades in on rear speakers.  Really, for folks that have good quality speakers all-around, this isn't a bad feature.

However, for those who want the main focus to be the front speakers, as I do, it is a problem.  For the most part, every other song swaps between front and back.  The 'surround' effect switches opposite to the main output, so that when the rear speakers are playing the main output, the front speakers are playing the surround.

I'm using ASIO Output with a WaveTerminal 192X soundcard.  Replay gain is on.  Output format: 32 bits.    Channels: 4 channels - JRSS 2.0.  Sample Rate: Source Sample Rate (I need a faster processor before upsampling).   Crossfade: Aggressive: 6 seconds.  Seek Smooth normal.  Stop: Fadeout Normal (Stop does NOT fade out though, but that's another problem).

Basically, I don't think the swapping is a bad idea, if you can provide a way to turn it off.  It'd even be cool for folks with 4 identical speakers to 'rotate' the image song by song: Song 1: LF+RF, Song 2: RF+RR, Song 3: RR+LR, Song 4: LR+LF.  But you do need a way to turn it off.

I tried smooth fading, and that didn't help.  I tried Gapless, and that didn't help either.

However, I did find a way to stop it! :o  I turned off the "Do not play Silence" feature. [/u] When that option is unchecked, the problem goes away.  So that'd be a good place to start looking.  But the problem with leaving that turned off is that it seems to totally eliminate the crossfading that I want to use.  So I have the choice of No crossfading but proper channels (leave "Do not play Silence" unchecked), or Crossfading, but channel swaps every song (Check "Do not play Silence").

I haven't updated from 11.0.105, because other than this particular problem, it works real well, and I'm not sure the newer versions will be as good or as stable.  (Any hints on that one?)

can I add that JRSS doesn't seem to work with the DFX plugin? Songs keep skipping.
JRSS is one of my favourite features of MC - I hope I can use it in conjuction with DFX... apart from that it does awesome work in 5.1
