Crash on Thumbnail drawing
« on: November 21, 2005, 08:21:20 am »

I have recently moved my media center library to a portable hard drive so that my work computer and home computer can share it and always update the tags of the same files. This has meant that MC has to redraw all of the thumbnails for everything though. Whenever I go into my video viewscheme Media Center crashes. I guess that one of the video files is causing the problem. It'd be cool if MC would have some kind of built in behaviour to skip building thumbnails for problem files, or remember which ones cause the problem and skip trying to build the thumbnail for it in the future. At the moment I always have to enter that view in list mode to save MC from crashing.

It may be the firmware for the drive.   Do you have a Maxtor drive?

Did MC crash before when the files were on your local drive?

Hi Jim,
The drive that my video files are on hasn't changed and I never had a problem before I changed the location of my library to a new drive. My library is now on a portable drive and I connect it to two computers running MC (it is set to "G:" on both) so that the same tags are always updated by both PCs.
The drive that the video files are on is a buffalo external usb2 drive. (I dont know the actual manufacturer of the physical drive itself).
Thumbnails view in video mode always causes a crash.

Also, though I can see thumbnails for all of my photos on one of my computers; on the other computer the thumbnails wont draw even if I do a "build missing thumbnails".

I am using build 11.0.316

Happens to me too. In my case, it has to do with some versions of the xvid codec. If you encode your own videos with certain versions of the xvid codec then Media Center has some issues when attempting to draw the thumbnails.

In some cases, Windows Explorer will actually crash because of the same problem....

if you do START->RUN and type   REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL and then browse to your folder with the videos (try thumbnail or details view) it might even crash there.

As far as my research can tell, it's a windows thing, and not a Media Center thing.

The fix? Remove any references to the xvid codec via uninstalling the codec. Install the new codec and reinstall Media Center.

JRiver folks: Do you think it would be possible to fix this somehow? MC 10 does not have this problem.  IT should be noted that the videos play fine.  At least an option to not scan for thumnails? I've looked all over the options and have not seen anything so I assume it's not there.

I remember an older post in which someone said that using a particular version of the codec worked.
