Media Centre and Media Jukebox Instances
« on: June 27, 2005, 06:47:07 am »

Hi all,

I came across jriver through a friend of mine and I'm currently trialing the Media Centre which seems very good.

What I want to try is using one PC running 2 monitors (On in the Lounge, one in the Dining Room) and run Media Jukebox in one monitor (Dining Room) and Media Centre in the Lounge.

Is this possible ?  Can Jukebox automatically pick up new files that have been ripped by Media Centre and vice versa ?

Also, on Media Server I like the Theatre View with the album covers, does Jukebox do this ?

A quick search on the forum came up with a MultiView plugin for Media Centre but I couldn't find any more information and couldn't download it either.  Is it still about ?

Thanks all,

Richie.

Why would you want to use Media Jukebox?  It's old, unsupported and out of date.  Why not just use MC on all your machines?  One license will allow you to run MC on all PC's that you own personally.

Didn't realise that Jukebox was old !

At the moment I just want to use 1 computer with 2 monitors, but I'm guessing that you can't run 2 instances of MC on one PC.  Anyone got any ideas or do I have to save for another client PC ?

Thanks,

Richie.

If you want to run them independently, you'll have to save your money! :)

Even if Jukebox wasn't old, you can't run more than one instance of MC and/or MJ at a time on the same computer.

Actually, MJ8 and MC11 cannot even be installed at the same time. Conflicting registry settings will cause problems and the programs will not be fully functional.

The only versions that can be installed (not used) at the same time are MC10 and MC11. Though, I had some problems also with that combination. In my case MC11 tried to use some plug-ins from the MC10 program folder.

It is best to have only one version installed.

I think it's time you explained clearly what it is you are trying to achieve.  Are you looking for some sort of multizone solution?  You don't need 2 instances of MC for that.  Just 2 outputs from your sound card or 2 soundcards.  What exactly are you trying to do?

What I'm trying to do is have one PC with 2 zones but the ability to control Zone 1 in Zone 1 (Lounge) and control Zone 2 in Zone 2 (Kitchen).

My thought at first was to run MC and MJ on one PC over dual monitors, MC in lounge and MJ in kitchen.  But it looks like this wont be possible.  I was wanting to use a touchscreen LCD in the kitchen which is the reason why I wanted the album art for easier searching.

By the sound of it I will have to use a client PC in the kitchen and network them together.

On another note, when in Theatre View, it's quite annoying when you click on the album art and a menu pops up.  I've searched for an option to turn this off but can't find one.  Is there an option so I can click once on the album art and it goes straight into the album ?

Thanks all,

Richie.

Richie,

My MultiView plugin will do exactly what you want (I am controlling 3 different zones now with 3 different monitors on the same pc).  It is no longer on the website because it was clear that no one was using it.  I have made some improvements to it so let me know if you are interested and I can put a new copy on the website for you to download.

By website I meant my personal website - I never "submitted" it to JRiver.  But here is the thread about it: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=24237.

I'd like to try it but none of the download links work.

Wow.  I had never seen your initial posting about the plugin, but that is pretty friggin cool.

And it does seem to do EXACTLY what the parent poster wanted.  Good show!

Ok, I put this back up on my website so the links should work now.  I have made some recent enhancements that are not in that version so I could put a new version up after some cleanup.  Let me know if you are interested after playing with it for a while.  Some enhancements are internet radio artist and song name display, colored borders around the main screen with custom text (time remaining, current artist, etc), and better search UI.

Well, thanks.  I posted a thread in this main forum at one point but as you can imagine it fell off the main page quickly.  It works quite well for my setup.

Hi Craig,

That's fantastic, I'll download the plugin and try to have a play this afternoon......I'm sure I could find another monitor somewhere around here !

By the way, do you have a problem losing focus ?  For example, if I used it in the kitchen then went into the lounge and tried using a remote control, would it know to switch back to the lounge ?

I'll have a play.

Thanks again,

Richie.

Hi Craig,

Just tried setting up the plug-in with the set up on your website, but when I opening MC11, this error message came up....

Could not find file "C:\multiview.xml"

Have I done something wrong ?

Thanks,

Richie.

Richie,

It will give this error until you specify a configuration file.  Look at the "Installation and Setup" section of the main webpage, but essentially you just click the browse button next to the configuration file name and navigate to the desired directory and type a new file name.  Then click "Save Changes" and it will use the new file for the configuration settings and not give you the warning again.

I am not sure how you plan to control things, but I use several remotes with an ir receiver hooked up to the pc.  Then, using the Girder control program I can send a keypress to a particular MultiView window which doesn't require the window to have focus.
