Separate boards
« on: October 04, 2002, 12:41:06 pm »

When we moved to this new software, we also separated the old board into several new ones.  You can see them all by selecting "Home" above.

Is this better?  Worse?

The old way was more of a mess, but I kind of miss it.

This is more organized. I miss the old board. You can see the various boards from home, but I don't fell as at home. Maybe just because the old board seemed more intimate. Probably can get used to this though, if necessary.

It's a good move - and there's probably even more room for improvement re. the organization of the boards.

But...I miss the old one as well, although I am slowly getting more used to the new look.

It's a great move and I don't miss the old board.  This one's much more organized, easier to read, easier to navigate, etc.

Im with mhorton. I kind of miss the old board - it felt more informal and for me who mostly lurked it was fun to check in on the state of the latest conversations.

But overall the new board is better, more 'businesslike' somehow, better organised and probably puts out a better image for new users. Dunno if its just my perception but there seem to be a greater number of new people posting here now - if thats true then it can only be a good thing.

De lurking time... Jet lag and fine wine may get to me but this is too important a theme to wait until I make sense...

As a previous proponent of the new forum I feel that the usability and image is a big improvement... I personally find hopping back and forth between the various forums not as simple and convienient as the old style all lumped together system but that is the price of new branches to the MJ tree... Also it is quite possible that not all users are as interested in all MJ topics as I am and for those people checking the relevant forum is easier....

Body clock... 48 hours+ and counting... The romance of travel is flushed right round the U Bend when jet aircraft are concerned... So much for the journey is the destination...

I miss being able to read everything easily at once from the old board because I read all the forums but that is because I read all the forums.
Alot of new users wont care about the beta software and so wont want to read that information and wont care about plugins either.

This way the new users dont see all the bug reports from the beta's. They also realise that plugins are seperate entities and not any fault of MJ if they crash.
I think it's alot better organised now and really helps to remove some of the problems that were being experienced before where new users were freaking out when they saw all the bug reports from the people that were testing the beta's.

This isn't as bad as I had initially thought it would be. Also, it was quicker in the old forum to find topics.

And....the JUMP (still) needs to be fixed at the bottom of the page. I know, it's at least the tenth time you heard this mentioned from me. But it would make navigation easier here. Big hint.

Would a sensible "halfway house" be to add some buttons to the top bar to make it easier to hop between different sections?
or a button to quickly list threads which you are participating in?
or a button to list hot threads?

I'm a wimpy newie so feel free to tell me to shut-up!

I'm with Jim on this one, would it be possible to have the old style, showing all posts, as an option?

One thing Ive seen on other boards (eg syntrilliums) is a separate forum of locked FAQ/tips posts. Might be useful here for common questions such as 'how do I burn a cross faded CD, what is Media Server, etc.'

Well,i do miss the old one,but at the same time DO NOT want to get it back.
The very spirit of the old one was fading anyway.
Less and less of freaking out topics, less post from 'the old gard',a lot of newcomers with only help questions.

Because of it the new forum is ways better .And with a 'music player number x' and a' media player number x' to come it is the only solution.
