Syncronizing Pictures & Suggestions to J.R's Devs.
« on: November 11, 2005, 03:09:57 pm »

Hey,
Tonight I have done some tagging in my picture-library. It's a hassle but quite nice when it's done.

However, I would like to synchronize the pictures to my laptop so I can show them to my friends. I'm not sure how this it done easily. Previously I have just reloaded a backup from my primary machine to the laptop but that was to get a picture of what music I have on my primary computer (i.e. not to have the actual music on the computer).

So basically I seek an easy way to move my pictures from one computer to another while keeping the tags. The directory structure is different on the two computers.

Also, it would be nice if pictures could be rotated with a hotkey -- preferably L and R for left and right, like in irfanview.

Thanks in advance,
Rasmus

Could you provide more information?

How the directory structures are different? Is it just the drive letter and/or the base path?

How much data/how many files?

Are you going to copy just a selection of the image files or the whole archive?

Can you see all the tags you need in the File Type Info window? (Select one of the images and check this: Action Window > File Properties > File Type Info.) Those tags are actually included in the image files and can be imported to another MC without any complex procedures.

On my main computer they are in D:\pictures\my pictures\
on the laptop they are in D:\backup\main\pictures\
A possible solutions would of course be to change the directory structure to match the one used on the main computer and just copy the database from MC on the main computer.

Not that many, actually. 3000-5000 maybe. Everything is to be copied.

I have added tags such as 'people', 'places', 'events'. These are not saved in the pictures  but in a separate file by MC. The trouble is to move the pictures, keeping the extended data.

edit: Wow! I have posted four hundred(!) post on a board dedicated to a piece of software ?

You should be able to transfer the files by network or by CD or DVD and then import them into another copy of MC.

I would do just that. I would copy the files outside MC and restore a library backup file on the laptop.

If you really like to keep the folder structure you can use the Find and Replace tool for changing the base folder part of the filenames. MC will find the files just fine after using the tool. In the tool dialog tick only the "Filename (path)" field and use these strings:
Find what:  D:\pictures\my pictures\   Replace:  D:\backup\main\pictures\

the tag info isn't in the file so you can just straight up transfer the files then just import them???  ie, with an audio file, mc puts the rating in the file so any mc program will recognize the ratings.  huh weird.
