Replacing songs in multiple playlists with new file format
« on: November 10, 2005, 12:50:57 pm »

I'm sure I've not searched properly and either a pointer in the right direction or some suggestion will help.

I have multiple playlists that contain the same song in mp3 format at 128 bitrate, for example. I'm in the process of reripping everything in ape (In some cases, mp3 @ 320)

Questions: Is it possible to find and replace the old instances of these songs? If so, how? I can't see where the F&R function in MC is designed to do this.

Once this is done, I want to delete all of the old low-fi files from the library.

Thanks for any ideas.

Is it safe to assume that this is impossible to do in any method other than manually?

Actually I do it quite often, to improve the bitrate. I make sure the file naming (and tagging) is the same as for the existing files and then just rip the new and "replace or overwrite existing files". MC doesn't save the "bitrate" in the library, so as long as the file name and tag stays the same, MC won't know that the files have been switched.

I have never tried it, but the same might work for format, as again MC does not store this info in the library, but rather, detects it as the track is played.

As usual, Alex has a better and more sophisticated solution. ;)

Modelmaker and Alex,

Thank you very much. It is amazing to me that sometimes the best solutions are simple and obvious (well, sort of  8) ).

I'm still kicking myself wondering why my search did not turn up the referred thread.

Again, thanks.
