Playlist editing is illogical
« on: January 12, 2006, 06:45:30 pm »

Using 11.1.98

1. Editing the order of tracks in a playlist, using drag: No matter how many times I click on the "Seq" header in the list view, the playlist display is immediately refreshed using some hidden sort order as soon as I make a change to the track order.  This makes the changes I've made non-WYSIWYG and therefore unreadable.

2. No matter how many times I right-click ContextMenu/Shuffle a playlist, using the list view, the playlist will ALWAYS start playing on the same song when it is next played.

3. Right-click ContextMenu/Shuffle on a playlist in the tree view simply doesn't work, ever. When the playlist is next played or listed, the previous order is still being used.

4. "Update Order" seems to rarely do anything very useful except reset the playlist to some hidden system default sort. Sometimes, it seems to help force MC to recognize a new "Shuffle", but this is not reliable. Its purpose is obscure.

works just fine here.
the sequence column keeps the tracks in order.
drag and drop or otherwise jumble the tracks up and you will notice that the sequence number does not change
now, with the tracks all in their desired positions, right click in the playlist entry in the tree and select "update order"
you should see a "fill sequence numbers in list order" take place.

if you don't, something else is wrong.

I have/had the same problem.

The problems is that when you create a playlist, the list view (where it shiws the list of files), does have a default sorting turned on.
To delete this default sorting, right click on a column header (eg. Artist) and choose "Customize current view..."

Therer you can remove all the fields in the "Sorting" box.

Now it should work fine.

Why does MC allow a sorting box for playlists ? I think by default this should be empty.

One thing I noticed is that after making a playlist and then including into a smarlist with no sort rules, the playlist order is not honored and Im not even sure what the actual sort order is.

Tools->Options->Tree & View->Sorting->Save changes on list header clicks

This will remember your way of sorting. You define sorting simply by clicking the header of the desired column. That's how it suppose to work, anyway.

I don't have any sorting rules for any of my playlists, and they all sort by "seq"

It makes a difference depending upon how you begin playback of the playlist.

if you apply sorting rules via "customise current view", then, regardless of sequence order, if you use the "play" button in the playlist header, MC sends the tracks to playing now as per the defined sorting rules. I consider this a bug. Regardless of how a playlist is presented, it should always play back in sequence order.

If you either double click, or right click > play, on a playlist in the tree, the tracks are played back in sequence order, regardless of the current sorting of the list, be it by column header clicks or sorting rules.

If you remove any sorting rules as described by bennyd above, the play button in the playlist header works as expected.

For the record, I just added a new playlist (F8) and it defaulted to no sorting rules in the "customise current view" dialogue, sorting by sequence as expected.

Tools->Options->Tree & View->Sorting->Save changes on list header clicks

This will remember your way of sorting. You define sorting simply by clicking the header of the desired column. That's how it suppose to work, anyway.
This option is OK if you're just starting out with your views and have still to finalise how you want them to default, once you've done that however, I'd recommend turning it off. That way, if you fancy seeing your list sorted another way temporarily, say by name for example, you can click on the name header. this is not saved, so the next time you load that view, or hit refresh, everything will be restored to your default sorting rules as laid out in the "customise current view" dialogue.

One thing I noticed is that after making a playlist and then including into a smarlist with no sort rules, the playlist order is not honored and Im not even sure what the actual sort order is.
I'm 99% certain that viewschemes with no sorting rules default to the "media type / artist / album" preset rule. adding these columns to a test list appears to bear that out:

Agreed on that. I can't think of a situation where this should not be honored. That is if the playlist contains audio files only. I don't have experience with other media types in a playlist. But i would think the seq no is the index here.

I turned off remember header clicks long ago, for all the reasons you very clearly mentioned. Customise view is the preferred way. But it won't keep between upgrades..heh. More reg hacking to be used.

Fixed using "Customize Current View", and clearing the stored sort orders, as suggested. Thanks for the tips, folks.

This problem still exists

This one still exists too.
but it's less of a problem now.

They should really change that and simply show the default in the customize current view settings.  When they are removed, nothing is controlling the smartlist but what you tell it to.
