4g iPod fails HDD scan
« on: January 23, 2006, 02:58:42 pm »

My 4g iPod (from TiVo Rewards) refuses to accept new music (after ~80 songs) and freezes. I re-initialized with same result.  I then update and restored using the updater app from Apple. Still no good.

I went into iPod's diagnostic mode and ran a HDD Scan. After 30-60 minutes, the diagnostic reported that the HDD scan had failed. Oh crap.

I tried running XP's chkdsk on the device, but it only runs "Phase 1" (no errs), then freezes with only one "tick" on the progress meter on "Phase 2".

What should I do next?

I got this iPod in the May 2005 timeframe from TiVo rewards. I realize that TiVo Rewards does not provide any kind warrantee/support and I do not have a sales receipt. Am I screwed?

Any suugestions?

I assume this is a nano, not the 1st gen ipod or a mini? If it's a nano I think you are hosed. If it's a gen 1 or mini you ought to be able to find a replacement drive.

Make sure you're using MC11.1 from our downloads page or from the MC board here.

If you have an apple store nearby, take it to the "Mac Genius bar"  ::)
Tell them it was gifted to you in May 2005 so you don't have a receipt.
They'll pull up the serial number and judge the warranty based on manufacture date.
