Garbled Playback
« on: February 12, 2006, 08:42:24 am »

MC 11.1.118 (& .117) - Garbled playback

This is a new development; PC playback has been fine until .117.

I am hearing garbled/skipping effects in every song (.mp3).  If I play these songs in Windows Media Player or on iPod, there is no issue.

Are there settings (dsp effects are off) that I can make to improve playback. Perhaps something within MC is corrupt.

Any suggestions?

Note:  I use TotalRecorder (2+ years) which does produce a somewhat similar effect in Quicktime playback.  Changing the audio playback device to my sound card alays corrects this problem in Quicktime.  Is there a known similar effect in MC??

Try a reinstall.  Uninstall, reboot, reinstall.  Something about the sound card driver may not be right.  Try switching playback between Wav Out and Direct Sound.  You may have other sound related software causing problems.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for the reply!  You do know it's Sunday, right??  :D

I presume a re-install will consume another .mjr?  I am down to like 3 remaining (multiple problems w/laptop and my other PCs, requiring MANY rebuilds, re-installs), though I think my year is almost expired (the .mjr count resets automatically, right?).

I'll give it a shot.

You can uninstall MC with its uninstaller. It does not remove the registration info.

There is no global restore reset date. They come back one by one. The amount of available restores increases by one a year after the date a restore was used.

Thanks, Alex,

With the MC uninstall, should I de-select "Remove all Media Center 11 Registry Entries".  This is where the registration info would be, right??

Uninstall > reboot > reinstall = same issue

DirectSound > WaveOut = Fixed!

Any clues what might have changed to require this settings change??

I think something else must have changed besides the MC version. Did you install any new drivers or audio programs?

You could try to increase the Direct Sound buffering. (Options > Playback > Audio > Output > Output mode settings...)
