fails to import OGG files
« on: September 18, 2002, 03:24:45 am »

When importing a directory full of OGG files, MJ v8.0.370 resulted in error messages ("this program has performed an illegal operation ... shut down ... contact the program vendor").  MJ v8.0.372 doesn't crash but simply fails to import them.

These are my own OGG files grabbed and encoded with EAC (beta 4).  I suppose I could try encoding with MJ, but there must be a reason why these don't work.  Suggestions ...

Can you play them with MJ?

Import a few at a time by dragging them into the content window.  One may be a problem.

No ... I cannot play them.  When I drag one of them to the playlist window I get this error:

Regarding how I encoded these files, pretty much the default settings for EAC|PLS|OGG, at a quality setting of 5.

If I were to try encoding these with MJ, how do I choose the equivelent "Q" setting which avoids compressing the channel-common-stereo?? (i.e., the difference between a 'q' setting of 4.99 and 5.00)

I forgot to add ... the error messages mentioned have nothing to do with my wireless networking problems (mentioned in another thread).  The errors came from a MJ (372) install and reading the computers own 'D' drive (Windows 98SE)

cheerios ... shAf  :)

Do check for updates in MJ to see if your ogg decoder is up to date.

As a test, download and install the ogg encoder plug-in and rip a CD to ogg.  Try playing the ripped files.

I just encoded an OGG with MJ ... custom encoder setting: -q 5 ... and it works  :o)

Except I now have a new problem ... and excuse my "newbie" questions:  Like other posts, the database lookup fails ... so this OGG is named 'track1.ogg'.  I'll look into this more, but at the moment I can re-insert the CD and nothing happens 'cept to indicate track1, track2, ..., and there being no button for "get info" (in spite of whether I enabled YADB or CDDB.

.. although encoding with MJ somehow allows importing of OGGs to work, I hope you'll look into the EAC|PLS|OGG issue ... that is, EAC simply calls on the distributed ODD encoder ... and I have many of these OGGs and do not want to encode them again.  Could it be an internal tag issue?  Can I otherwize, tell MJ to ignore internal "stuff", and allow me to manage there tags with MJ???

Could you inadvertently have EAC setup to add ID3v1 or ID3v2 tags to your OGGs?  This might be causing the problems.

Over at Hydrogen Audio they've discussed the problem caused by EAC adding ID3 tags to ogg files.
http://www.audio-illumination.org/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=8&t=3240&s=99b72f420a8bd9fdd489dd923abf7060

They've also recommended a program to strip the ID3 tags from the ogg files so you won't have to re-rip and encode all those corrupted files.

Try this:
