embedded album art
« on: August 21, 2006, 10:49:10 am »

I have 1,200 albums in my collection.  Each album has embedded album art attached.  Some album art was acquired from Walmart.com or Buy.com.  The rest was scanned.  I want to make the album art uniform in size.  Is their a way to do this?

It looks like I stumped the panel.  I had 31 looks and no responses.  I can't believe that I am the only one who has this problem.  When I sync my handheld (Toshiba Gigabeat S) with Media Center 11.1, the smaller resolution album art is transferred but the scanned album art immediately stalls the player and my handheld.  I just thought reducing the size of the scanned album art (embedded) would make it work properly.

I don't know of a way to do it with embedded art.
I use external art.
I just import all the folder.jpg files into MC and tag their genre as "albumart".  I then select all of those and do an image resize which brings them all down to 300x300.

I wonder if I can somehow extract the art, then do as you say?

Mp3tag can extract cover art. Check their forum for instructions how to use scripts for mass extraction or ask advice there. I think it should be possible. Configure Mp3tag to write ID3v2.3 ISO-8859-1 tags for making it fully compatible with MC's tagging system (I assume you have MP3 files).

The process mentioned above with MP3tag is extremely complex and time consuming.  I spent all day yesterday working on it to no avail.  I wonder if Media Center 12 will offer resizing of embedded album art.  Any idea?

Did you use MC to embed the art in the first place ?

Is there no way to remove album art from many files, picking the right art and then embedding it back in again.

Sorry not to be of any more help but you just made the case for *not* embedding album art in media files a little bit stronger.

I know, no help from me.
But embedding album art means at least to *keep* it for sure. I use MC for years. And lost cover art more than once (question of a good backup, I know). So I changed my mind. And saved a lot of time since then.

I used MC's feature to store in the tag.

Not sure you even have to import them, just navigate to them within MC.

What if some have odd shapes, like 300 x 290 or something?  I'll have to be careful about that, not sure what it would do to resize them square.

Don't worry about them being square or not, just choose resize at 300x300 and make sure the check box for maintain aspect ratio is checked.
