perbcast testing - help please -- Found Reg entry for PCAST
« on: August 24, 2006, 05:09:49 pm »

Would like to test Podcast   perbcast area more, as it is one that I am interested in.

BUT, I can't get pcast:// to be associated with MC, it keeps wanting to open iTune$.  Can anyone help with this?  The file association is set in MC, but this is not a file association per se, it is a .... Internet protocol helper program?  Help me out with this one.

Are there any changes from 11.1 --> 12 that you would like us to look at in the testing?

MC11.1 and MC12 both have a "podcast" file type.  Make sure you've got it checked in your file associations.  Then MC should grab any pcast:// links.  You might have to turn off the association in iTunes.

yes, i have that checked in MC.  iTunes does not have a place to disassociate  that i could find.

What tells http: to go to firefox or IE ?  what tells ftp: to open an FTP program?   hmmm.

Maybe i need to uninstall iTunes  :)   ;)

Try looking in Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File types.

You are reading my mind, I was just in there and I think I need to add a file extension of (NONE) and then select "iTunes Podcast" from the drop down, but that does not quite seem right.

Do you have a (NONE) association related to MC Podcasts?

Jim, i have to go to bed, but this might be useful to your develpers:

http://gonze.com/weblog/story/it1c

about 1-click perbcast subscription standards (and how Apple mucked it up with iTunes)

I would like to get this working, will keep trying and let you know.

Maybe its a registry entry?

I stopped 'perbcasting' when the web page went bye-byes, assuming it had been shelved for now.

Is the perbcast server working in the current builds?

Not sure about the server.

I think they used the term perbcast to mean both the origination of streams (what you are referring to) and subscribing and listing to podcasts/perbcasts.  I am just looking at the receiving side.

Jim, the more i get into this, the more confusing it gets.

* apparently Mac vs. Windows works differently -- Mac handles pcast:// better and windows handles .pcast as a file extension better.

* I use Firefox and setting MIME types in Firefox used to exist but then was taken out

*  there is gaining consensus on how to handle one click podcast subscription, consensus from everyone but iTunes.

I don't know if I am the only one having this problem with iTunes over riding MC, but its sure hard to change.

found the registry entry....  I THINK!

under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT , each URI scheme has its own listing.

What would be the JR command to execute to import a Perbcast/podcast?

EDIT:  I'm using the one from the MC12 Subscribe command, seems to work:
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MC12.exe" /Subscribe "%L"

You're out on the edge, but try deleting the pcast key.  Back up your registry first.

This seems to work, putting the MC key in there.  Not deleting it.
