Library Server help..Cannot connect over internet
« on: December 05, 2006, 07:51:55 am »

Have searched and tried all the options/suggestions on this board but I still cannot get the Library server to work with 12.0.123

No router and firewall turned off

Have tried all the ports from 80 to 90

The client is a dial up machine...Don't know if this is an issue

I am just entering the server ip address ie209.195.XX.XX:81
when I try to load I get the following

Media center failed to load the library and will attempt to load the previously selected library.

Seems like it would be a fairly easy setup with my configuration.
Can someone give me some help...

From a browser, enter

http://209.195.xx.xx:81/GetVersion

You should get a blank page. If that works, try /GetLibrary instead of /GetVersion.
It should ask you to download a file.

If these don't work, it's a basic connectivity issue. If these do work, it's something else.
Post the results here and we'll figure out the next step.

I get a "Page cannot be displayed for both".

Another point..I can use the dial up pc as the server and I can get it working..but It needs to go the other way.

Thanks

It's a basic connectivity issue (but make sure Library Server is running, that would have the same symptoms).

It's probably a firewall or a NAT issue.

The client machine is connecting via dialup (not DSL or cable) to an ISP, correct?

How is the server connected to the Internet? Is it at home, or work?

Library Server is running.
I have turned the firewalls off.
yes the client machine dials up to an ISP.

Server connects from home (high speed phone)

It was written for a different purpose, but this page has some information that may help:

Then you could try google for more information on networking.  The problem you have isn't an MC problem.

Some DSL Connections are behind a "firewall" no matter what (even when the computer is directly connected to the DSL Modem) because the DSL provider uses NAT to assign "fake" IP addresses to their customers.

What is the server's public IP address?  Does this match what shows if you do a ipconfig /all command at the command prompt?  If not, then there is a firewall doing NAT between you and the Internet.  If it's something inside your house -- maybe the DSL modem is a router too (many of the newer "wireless" ones are actually a DSL modem and a router in the same box) then this might be the problem -- then you should be able to solve it.  If not, then you'd probably have to get a different ISP (or call them and demand a real IP address).

Assuming that the two addresses don't match, what is the output from ipconfig?  What kind of DSL/Cable modem do you  have (make and model)?

Besides the normal networking Problems

Some ISP's Do Not Allow Some Servers To Run, And Or Block Some Ports Some Servers Run On. This Is Normally Not An Issue (And May Not Be In This Case), But There Have Been Reports From Some Users That Some Providers (Mine Included) That Block Some Ports.

Now "NetZero high speed dial" up Is Nothing But A Farce Where They Strip Out Data Making The User Feel Surfing Is faster. Including Data Compression, Striping Out Data From Images (Making Them Look Not As Good), And Scanning Ahead (Downloading Data When The Modem Is Idle).

I Have Never Heard Of A Dialup (high speed phone). Dialup Modems Are They Not Limited To 56k (Normally Lower)?

DSL Modems Are Not Dialup So I Am Not Sure What A High Speed Dialup Is.

because the DSL provider uses NAT to assign "fake" IP addresses to their customers.

Yes that can be a major problem.

Some Dialup ISP's also will Lease A IP address to the user for a matter of Min's or a few hours. AOL was good for this once (maybe still) so once you do get it working the IP Address lease will expire and the ISP will assign a new IP address and the connection will be broken.

Thanks for all your help everyone. The support itself makes my purchase of this product worth it.

I had an internet gateway that needed to be configured.

Thanks again. I appreciate all the help.
