iPod - tracks ending about 10 seconds too soon
« on: December 12, 2006, 10:40:06 am »

I just synched my ipod last night with the latest MC12 version.

Today, all newly transcoded tracks seems to be ending about 10 seconds early on the ipod.  Anyone else notice this?

Tracks that were uploaded to the ipod in the past, seem to play okay, it's just the recently transcoded (ape to mp3) tracks that seem to end early.

I cannot say for sure what version of MC12 introduced this problem.

Can you tell me more about your iPod (model, firmware, etc.), about the conversion you are using (encoder, settings, etc.) and possibly send me one of the original ape files (rick at jriver dot com). Thanks.

I'm not sure that it's 10 seconds, but I'm definately getting tracks chopped off at the end, often with a sharp static crack.

Wondering if it was down to files in the cache, I emptied the cache, initialised the ipod, waited 14 hours for it sync, only to find the problem was worse, not better. So, chances are that much of the cache was probably good, and now it's maybe not so good.

I have a 60gig 5G ipod running firmware 1.1.2

During sync, I convert to mp3 (if needed) using the lame encoder.

If you connect your iPod to your PC and play the files from within MC, do you get the same thing?

I have an ipod 80 gig, version 1.2

When I get home this evening...

I'll try playing a file from the cache on my pc and see if it plays okay.  And I can try playing the file on the ipod from MC and let you know.

And I will send one of the "bad" files to Rick this evening.

I also found a whole album of tracks on the ipod that will not play at all.  When I try to play them, the ipod just sits there and does nothing forever until I skip the track.  I'll check out those files from the cache too and let you know.

Thanks.

Sample files have been sent to Rick.  Please let me know if you need anything else.

The same happens to me. But only with cached files.
Encoding "by hand" results in complete mp3s for my iPod Nano.

I posted this same issue in the MC12 iPod gapless playback not working thread. Here is the post:

Quote
I'm also having problems using 119.

1. I also get tiny glitches over transitions. Not all, some play as seamlessly as when I use itunes to upload, but others display a tiny glitch (either a very short gap or a click) that is not present when itunes handles the upload.

2. My master library is in WMA lossless. If I convert on the fly when transferring to the ipod (lame --preset fast extreme) some songs end prematurely (between 2 and 10 seconds prematurely; the song progress bar on the ipod never reaches the end). It seems as though the song duration is being incorrectly written to the ipod database. This only seems to happen if the conversion is happening on the fly. If I delete the track from the ipod and retransfer so that MC12 uses the MP3 version in the handheld cache song durations are correctly handled (though issue 1 remains).

3. The time remaining estimate for files being transferred to the ipod is erratic. I left it last night claiming 4mins to go, with a transfer rate of 5.6Mb/s, when it was roughly 10% of the way through a 50Gb sync.

More info:
The WMA lossless library is on a network share
The handheld cache is on an otherwise empty local drive
I'm using 2 instances of lame on a Core 2 duo. This keeps processor use at 80-100% (its very quick though)
Ipod is a Gen 5.5 80Gb
OS is WinXP Home SP2

Cheers
Eric

So it doesn't seem to be dependent on the source of the file. As a workaround delete the newly added files from the ipod and resync. In my experience if it syncs from the handheld cache rather than converting and syncing in one step the problem goes away.

Cheers
Eric

interesting.
I think it might be related to the "skip leading and trailing silence" setting.

My source files are .flac, .mpc, and .ape.

Files from the cache play OK, but, as far as I can tell, the point at which the ipod bugs out, is where the track begins to fade out, and then the silence at the end is skipped. If I play the same file back from the ipod directly, using MC, it plays correctly, but on the ipod itself, it ends abruptly with a static crack.

I'll delete from the ipod and resync, report back when tested, but it feels like Eric may be on to something with his post above. I don't think it's gapless related as I'm using firmware v1.1.2, and (please correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think that has gapless support.

Eric's work-around of deleting from the ipod then re-syncing from the cache appears to have worked.

Heck of a time consuming work-around mind you. Hopefully, there's enough clues there to enable the bug to be nailed.

Ok.

We fixed a bug in build 12.0.117 that may have been causing this. The bug occurred when a file was converted, transferred and then bad information was written to the iPod database (in-line conversion was the problem, whether or not the files were cached didn't matter). So if the files were originally synch'd to the iPod prior to that build, that could be the culprit and initializing the iPod and re-syncing would be the remedy.

If you don't want to re-sync your entire iPod you can try re-syncing just the bad files by making just those files re-sync by change the rating or something and see if this clears up the problem.

However, according to marko, he still had this problem after initializing and re-synching and I'm assuming he did this with a build greater than 12.0.117 so it may be back to the drawing board.

We still have not been able to reproduce this so keep the feedback coming. If someone can reproduce this with a single track please send me (rick at jriver dot com) the original file, the converted file and the iTunesDB file copied from the iPod.

Thanks
