smartlists on Zen Micro
« on: May 04, 2007, 11:26:22 am »

Maybe I should ask this first - Is there anywhere to go to find smartlists others have created?

Just ordered the Micro and have a question about playlist creation.

I would like to set up a smartlist that will randomly play songs without repeating any artist, or repeating any song. And I would like this to continue over a period of days until every song on the player has been played. This is what I'm thinking, I don't remember the proper syntax at the moment-

random, not recently played artist/not recently played song. Is there such a thing as Not Recently Played Artist?

If so, I think that's all I need the first time through, it will play one song by every artist. But once that happens, the 2nd time would it not play the artists in the same order as the first time and if so, if there a way to avoid that?

A related problem, some artists are going to have more songs than others, and some artists only have 1 song. Would that 1 song not end up in the playlist every time through?

I've found the answer from a combination of posts elsewhere, I'll post here in case someone might want to do the same thing. It's slightly different than what I posted above, but this will randomly select songs that have not been played in the past 30 days, and will not play more than one song by any artist.

[Last Played]=>=40320 ~sort=[random] ~nodup=[Artist]

I will also create one of these for each Genre.

This actually doesn't work. It works in MC to bring up a list of songs, but I can't transfer the smartlist to Zen. I can only transfer the specific songs that come up each time.

OK, fine, if you can't transfer just the "rules" of a smartlist that's probably because Zen isn't built for it. But I'm having another problem. I created a playlist in MC, all the songs were already on the ZEN, and MC told me they wouldn't be copied because of that. This defeats the purpose of a playlist, I know I already have the songs, I want to play them in a certain way.

I would also like to create a smartlist that selects only from songs that are on the ZEN. It's full so I don't want to add more songs.

This is a request that has come up several times before. We'll take a fresh look at it...

A pretty quick workaround is to delete a single file from the device. MC will transfer just the one file and any playlists in the sync.
