MC12 and Podcasts (OPML files)
« on: July 02, 2007, 02:49:41 pm »

I've using the 275 version of MC12.  I've tried the others, but I've been sticking with MC since version 7 because it handles audio and video the best (at least for me).  However, as far as postcasts are concerned:

Is there a way to import an OPML file?

I've not found any way, and perhaps I'm missing it.  I've been using ITunes just for audio postcasts, and I'd like to export he OPML file and import it into MC.  MC handles my Sandisk 280 and ITunes doesn't.

Are these podcasts that you subscribe to with an OPML file? Or is this something different?
Could you post a link of a podcast with an OPML file?

Thanks,

from wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OPML
OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) is an XML format for outlines. Originally developed by Radio UserLand as a native file format for an outliner application, it has since been adopted for other uses, the most common being to exchange lists of web feeds between web feed aggregators.

I use ITunes to subscribe and then export the list in OPML:

Here's what a piece of my OPML looks like:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<opml version="1.0">
<head>
   <title>iTunes Subscribed Feeds</title>
   <dateCreated>Tue, 12 Jun 2007 15:24:13 GMT</dateCreated>
   <dateModified>Tue, 12 Jun 2007 15:24:13 GMT</dateModified>
</head>
<body>
   <outline text="Audio Medica News - Medical News Interviews" type="rss" xmlUrl="http://www.audiomedica.com/podcasting/podcast.xml" htmlUrl="http://www.audiomedica.com" />
   <outline text="Bigupradio.com KNOTTY DREAD RADIO" type="rss" xmlUrl="http://bigupradio.hipcast.com/rss/bigupradio_knotty_dread_radio.xml" htmlUrl="http://www.bigupradio.com" />
   <outline text="Bigupradio.com DEADLY MIX RADIO Show" type="rss" </body>
</opml>

Why not subscribe directly to the podcast in Media Center?

Two reasons.  Not every podcast makes it's RSS easy to find.  Some parties really think the entire world is iTunes.  Second, I also do have a Mac, and you don't run on it , at least not without virtualization.

Can you give me a link to a podcast that has an OPML feed? I don't mean what iTunes produces, I mean a web page with an OPML file.

Thanks

My error.  Podcasts don't send in OPML -- thst's standard RSS, but Juiced, iTunes, etc. use OPML to exchange podcast lists.  If you have 50+ podcasts, it's a pain to subscriber to each one, one-by-one in MC.  Rather, you just import the OPML extracting the URLs from there.

I'll look into this. Anyone else want this feature?

I read that the ability to import OPML has been added to MC12.  How do you use this new feature?

Make sure podcasts is clicked in the File Association setup, then double click on an opml file in Windows Explorer.

Feeling pretty dumb...  I did as you said and, yes, it opens up MC but then what?  I don't see the feeds anywhere.  Also, I don't see a way of exporting my list of podcasts to an OPML file.  I've read up on what can be done with OPML and I would find it quite useful.

Also, OPML importers typically allow the user to choose which podcasts to import.  Is that not implemented in MC?

I've not yet found a podcast feed that MC will subscribe to by clicking a link.

if MC is running, nothing happens when the link is clicked, and if it's not running, clicking the link causes MC to open, but nothing else happens.
podcasts is ticked under file associations.
the only way I've been able to get podcasts into MC is by manually adding the url.
there are heavier podcast users than me around here so I figured that the problem was more likely mine than MC's, but I'm not so sure now...

Open Podcasts in the tree, then drag the page you're on from your browser into MC.  Then click the link.  I know that this will work.

Open the podcast portion of the tree. The feeds should be there.

There is no choice (yet) of what to import. And exporting isn't done yet either.

That's where I looked.  They don't appear so I can only assume the OPML files I've been trying to use don't have valid video or audio feeds.

Found the problem - the opml is nested, and I didn't expect that. I'll fix it.

Fixed (including the extra "Downloaded Podcasts" entry) in build 280 or higher.
