Problem with Playlists
« on: March 11, 2008, 09:07:37 am »

First post. Hi everyone! A happy MC user for many years and now I have a problem that needs solving. I recently built a new PC and restored my MC 12 licence, copied all my music files over to the new build and imported all my playlists from the old PC to MC12 on the new machine. Problem: The playlists are blank. Some are .m3u and some are .mpl playlists but all are blank. I have successfully exported and imported playlists from/to XP PCs but this is an export/import from an XP to Vista PC.

Is it possible that the playlists can't 'see' the music files on the new PC due to the tagging? Something else perhaps? I am loathe to have to rebuild all my playlists manually, any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

MC 12.0.451 on both PCs. Export PC-XP home, import PC-Vista Home Premium.

The playlists may not refer to files on the same drive?

You can open the playlists in a text editor and use a find & replace tool for correcting the possibly wrong base paths.

Off the top of my head, I'm betting that the problem lies in the fact that Vista uses a "Users" folder instead of a "Documents and Settings" folder. The Music folder is also in a new place (it's no longer inside the My Documents folder) and has a new name (no more "My ").

So if your music used to reside in "C:\Documents and Settings\Birdman\My Documents\My Music" it now most likely resides in "C:\Users\Birdman\Music". Your exported playlists probably have the old path for everything. But like Alex said, fixing it should be an easy fix using Notepad. :)
