Resume Feature for UPnP Server
« on: May 02, 2008, 04:09:14 pm »

How hard would it be to implement a "Resume Last Stream" option when using the UPnP server? (Orb has someting like this with its web interface.) In my vision, the feature would be an extra item on the top level UPnP menu tree. It would resume the last track being played at the last position (within the track) it was played.

This would significantly increase practical ability to listen to podcasts using the MC UPnP server, which is compromised for several reasons currently: (i) one can't "pause" and resume playing a track being played for more than about a minute before the attempt to resume playing fails; (ii) no FF/RW (at least with many UPnP clients, means it is hard to get back to location you paused without listening to the track from the beginning; (iii) you can't move from one room (UPnP client) to another without starting the track again from the beginning.

More grandiose, but similar, features have been suggested on other threads, but I am afraid that the best may be the enemy of the good with respect to such features. My hope is that this less grandiose feature would be much easier to implement, yet address a large portion of the problems caused by factors (i), (ii) and (iii).

Thoughts? Responses?

I think this is not easy: Media Center's UPnP server is driven by requests from the UPnP device. So, the UPnP device would have to have this option somehow....

Here's a little more detail about the implementation of what I was envisioning. (Still may be hard, but maybe not as hard as you are thinking :)) My UPnP device is the Roku Soundbridge, so some of my descriptions may be specific to that unit, but that should not affect the fundamental structure of the idea:

-- Browsing from the Roku currently brings up a response from the UPnP server that lists a variety of viewschemes. Tacked on to that list would be an additional item called "Resume Last Stream"

-- When selected, the UPnP server would begin playing the last files it played from the last position played.

-- This would require that information on the last track and the location within the last track to persist from one UPnP session to the next in some way on the server.

Out of curiosity (and not being sarcastic!), where is the difficuly part?

Thanks.

You are correct, it's not as hard as I thought.

Ok, so I'll ask the obvious followup: any chance this might be implemented?  :D

Someday, certainly... soon, probably not. -- j
