"European"  ?

Are you speaking about the region code 2 DVDs? (2 = Europe & Japan)

For instance, if your DVD drive is set to region code 1 you are not supposed to be able to play code 2 discs (some drives allow changing the region code up to 5 times). It is possible to use a software hack that disables the region code protection. These hacks may or may not be legal depending on the local laws.

An easy solution is to use two DVD drives that are set to different region codes. (This works on XP, but I don't know if Vista has changed.)

Thanx for the warm welcome ;D

I really didn't expect to get an answer that quick...

As soon as the DVD is loaded in MC I get a Windows Tool Tip notification that the colour scheme has been changed to Vista Basic out of compatibility reasons. Same story with every DVD I have tried so far. I am now using build 470.

Erm, I must admit I'm no expert when it comes to TV/DVD science and use MC pretty much exclusively for music.

However, I think that ain't it, as I haven't made any changes to the region code settings and the DVD's play fine in other programs like Windows Media Center, etc. The DVD's are also bought in the same country as my laptop.

So the problem is probably not related to the origin of the DVDs. You just happen to have "European" DVDs. Correct?

I am not familiar with Vista's safe mode features (I use XP), but probably MC selects an installed DirectShow filter that does not work corretly on Vista. You could try the CCCP filter & codec pack:
