Media Server Connection Frustration!

Hi all,
I am having a problem connecting to the Media Server running on my home machine from my work machine. The server is up and running no problems on my home machine, and I can ping the ip address from my work machine fine. I am using the correct port. It just doesn't find it when I try to connect, it is so odd.
When I do the reverse as a test, that is set up Media Server running at work, I can connect to it with no problems from home. But I want to connect to my home machine from work. I have DSL with a static IP at home. I called my DSL provider and my ISP and they said they have nothing running that would prevent this. Obviously file sharing works since I can run p2p programs at home with no problems.
Somebody help! I want to hear my tunes while at work :)

Other Info:
Using MJ 8.0.320
Windows XP Pro

- I can ping it from work or somewhere else no problem
- no firewall or software which would prevent me from connecting
- Network Adapter TCP/IP filtering is set to permit all (i.e. no
special filtering)
- P2P programs work fine

Any help is most welcome!

Jeff,
   Your router might be using NAT. Please check out this link first and see whether it helps. http://www.music01.com/faq.html

Thanks for the info Ray. I looked at this page and it makes sense, but where in XP to I find a NAT database?   I do not have a hardware router.. is this a software setting in XP?

Jeff,
    I just remembered something. XP has a internal firewall settings under the Connection Properties -> Advanced (tab). Try uncheck it and see what happen.

Thanks Ray, but I am not running the built-in XP firewall.  
I have never checked that option in advanced network properties!

Jeff,
I'm afraid you'll have to work this one out on your own.  Make sure you have the same version of MJ on both machines.

Your problem may be just IP addressing and forwarding.  If you are using one PC as a router, the others may not have addresses that are visible to the outside world, so you must set up forwarding.  Try an Internet search to learn more.

I Remember Once I Answered Yes To Something On A Install, I Did Know Know It Was The Firewall Since It Was Not Worded Fire Wall, But It Turned The Firewall On. And I Had This Same Problem.

As They Said You Need To Get The IP #, If It Is like, xx,0,0,0, etc... That Is A Internal Routing IP Address And Will Not Work. You Need A Real IP #

If You Post The IP# Someone Can Varify If That Is A Router IP# Address Or An IP#

Well,
I've searched all over, I think I'm screwed on this..

I would prefer not to post the IP address for fear of hackers, but I can assure you it is not anything like *.0.0.0, it is a real ip address.

Jeff,

Perhaps try this:

1) Launch Media Server.

2) Click Start > Run, then type "cmd" (without quotes) and click OK.  In the command window that appears, enter "netstat -a" (again without quotes).

You should see an entry similar to the following:

Proto  Local Address            Foreign Address     State
TCP    :   :0   LISTENING

If the entry scrolls by, try hitting the Pause key to stop the scrolling (hit Esc to continue scrolling).  You need to be fast!

3) Close Media Server and see if the same port entry is still there.  It is possible you have a port conflict.  Only one application may listen on any given port at a time.

4) Perhaps try a different port number.

Yes, I had tried setting different port addresses  i.e. 80,81,82. I highly doubt the port would have a conflict, but I will try your suggestion just to see it "verified" if you will!

A few other things you can try...

From a cmd prompt, type "ipconfig".  Make sure that the ip address it reports is the public static ip address assigned by your ISP.  If it's not the same, you are behind a NAT/Firewall box somewhere.

Doublecheck the "netstat" tip from scodan and make absolutely sure that something is listening on the chosen port and that it disappears then you shut down the media server.

See if you can connect to the server from an MJ client on the SAME machine.

Open a browser window at work and point it at your home media server:  "http://yourip:yourport/".  If you get a message
"You are not using a standard Music01 protocol to access this server." it means that the server and network are OK and you have a client side MJ problem.

Thanks for the info..I think the only possible answer would be the "NAT/Firewall" possibility.
The netstat shows that there are no conflicts.
I can connect no problem from the same machine.
I cannot get any response at all from work (if I got an error, that would be a good start!)

I will try to ask whoever I get at tech support to put me through to a network administrator at my ISP. Hopefully they won't be stuck up about this and let me contact someone who knows about this stuff. (I had contacted them before about this problem and all they advised was to contact the maker of the software)

Hopefully I will get some answers..

There is another possibility and that is this -- your ISP may not allow inbound connections to servers.

What you could do (just as a test) is set up MJ and Media Server on the PC that connects to the Internet.  This one has to have a real address.

As far the question of whose problem it is, I would say it is your responsibility to have a basic understanding of your network or to hire someone who does.  It's not reasonable to expect your ISP or your software vendor to solve it.

These days you might find a 14-year-old who could do it for you in exchange for a couple of CD's.

I am not running a network.  I simply have a PC at home with a DSL connection. That's it. Nothing fancy. There is only 1 pc connected to the Internet and that's it!!

I just want to connect to it from work and so far it looks as if the ISP would be the "guilty" party insofar as blocking certain things .. and as they say they don't, well, I need to see if I can contact a Network Admin there and ask him why. Perhaps they are blocking inbound server requests as you say.. but then why would p2p programs work.?.. hmmm

Jeff,  what was the result of the ipconfig?  Does the ip address that the machine reports match your public static address as assigned by your ISP?

What's the exact model of DSL modem you're using?

If you're doing P2P, you may be already using the port.

While trying to figure this out I did turn off all other p2p programs to isolate the problem. (I've send you some other info Remy - thanks)

I'll have more info tomorrow when I call the dreaded ISP..
