MC 13 should 'autoimport' MC12 database and settings
« on: November 02, 2008, 07:52:51 am »

First of all, I think Media Center is a very fine and flexible product.

Having said that, I think the setup deserves improvement...

I installed MC13 and found that I should configure everything from scratch.

For a  while I went thru the forum .. but I think one needs to manually move / copy previous database
and maybe some settings from the c:\drive\bla bla.

Need to collect the possible solutions from other users and combine them and -bottomline-
spend too much time on the forum in an attempt to figure out the best way.
By then I might as well have gone thru all the steps of a manual configuration.

Question: Why is it that MC13 setup does not detect the previously version and at least does not
offer an option to import the installed MC12-settings?
Same goes for the database. MC13 setup shd offer to import (=copy the database to a new
userdefined folder).
e.g. from x:\Media Center 12\data -> x:\Media Center 13\data

x:\Media Center 12\BackUp\  this users may copy themselves using Explorer, though it wud be handy
if the the setup can do that as well.

Also MC13 might detect the database and backups of MC12 and ask users to _copy_ them
to a new userdefined location, like x:\Media Center 13\Backup    etc.

Hm... I launched MC12

Great...!

During setup, MC13 will search for an MC12 library and offer to use it.

MC13 can also restore an MC12 backup.

Sounds like something went wrong during setup.  If you installed MC13 in the same directory as MC12, that could cause a problem.

Nope, not with me...  :(
(Else I wud not have come up with the idea)

Come to think of it, maybe MC13 is looking on the C-drive for the data??
I think there is nothing there.

I have installed all on a different partition,
F:\Media Center 12\
F:\Media Center 12\Data
F:\Media Center 12\Libarary
F:\Media Center 12\BackUp
and so on

MC13 has beens setup in
F:\Media Center 13\
etc.

For me, MC13 imported the Database (Library) just fine...but it is installed in the default location on the C: drive.

MC13 does NOT import your Preferences/Options/Settings. You do need to go through and double check all of those.

A few folks around here have figured out a way to export their registry entries from MC12 and import them into MC13, but I went the more manual way.

I prefer to have this on a different partition so I can re-install an imagefile of windows without worrying about
overwriting the data.

The idea is that either one can tell MC12 to export all its (in a kind of .cfg file whatever) and import that into MC13 or just in case
MC12 got messed up for whatever reason and one may need to re-install it,   or  or MC13 auto-import those settings.
Seems to me it is a bit userfriendly and a quality product as MC  shd have something like, imho ...

Well anyway..
