What should we call Handhelds?  Portable Devices?  MP3 Players?  etc?

The lines have blurred a lot since the first MP3 players came out in 1998.  We supported the Diamond Rio, by the way, but that's another story.

It's also hard to cleanly separate them from cell phones, cameras, GPS, etc.  Even some PC's are small enough to fit in your pocket.

For years, we've called them Handhelds in MC.  I've also seen them called:

MP3 Player
iPod (as a generic term like Xerox)
Portable Media Player

Maybe we should just call them "Portable Devices".  Would that work?

I'm also thinking about splitting this board into two -- one for iPods and one for "the rest us".  Would that work?

Yes, this works for me.  Portable devices is pretty obvious and covers them all nicely.

I think it does.  A cell phone that plays media must by definition be a portable media player, and pretty much all phones play media now.

I'd prefer keeping them combined, personally. For the iPod models that you do support, there is enough similarity with other portables in their interface with MC to hang together (I use iPods as well as Sansas and a non-Apple phone). Now, if you're thinking about doing something to sync with iTunes...then that would be a different story.
