Random Picks

Getting ready to burn tomorrows picks for drive time music came up with some interesting results. I decided to make a smartlist using these rules :

~s=670  This gives a random generation of files of no more then 670 MB. This way I can fit all the data on an mp3 cd without having to worry about the overhead that is built into MJ. The funny thing is I decided to play it. So MJ jumps to the playing now window. Fine. But as soon as I go back to the smartlist, I have whole new group of songs. Hey, this is different. More tinkering. Jumping back and forth between playing now and the smartlist keeps generating new combinations.

I'm guessing that if one of these mixes satisfies my taste the way to save it intact would be to create a playlist first. Copy said smartlist and move it to the playlist.

I think instead of carefully created playlist that get scrambled when sent to the burner, I'll start using rules like these for a change of pace. I had assumed that playback of the smartlist would 'lock' it in.  So when I went back to it from the playing now window I would see the original list.

Anyway, does anyone out there have a different combination that works some what like this? I'd like to try out some others that you have come up with.

Hi MH

yes, that is the normal behaviour with the random selection. I use it all the time (not for burning) and have turned off shufling since I've started to use this.

I guess if you want to carefully select the content, then yes you should send it in a static playlist where you can then add, remove etc...

But in the spirit of random, you can just generate and then send to the burner. This should mantain the order (altough you may have to turn shuffle off.. not sure)

claudio,

I discovered that MJ does indeed keep the original selection intact while playing now. It is just the smartlist that changes.

I did make a playlist to send to the burner once there was a random list I liked. I have a feeling that there will be a bunch of new playlists being made in short order now.

This very cool, it digs up stuff I'd normally overlook when building a playlist. And even cooler, if you don't like it, just click somewhere else and back again for a whole new batch of music!!

I also found out that I can add other varibles to the original. Example : ~s=670,>180

As near as I can tell it gives the the above mentioned parameters only with songs that are greater than three minutes in length.

I'd still like to be able to make a playlist that is carefully arranged and saved without having to do the file properties and such. But this also works well.
