JRiver media center 15 DVD issues
« on: July 05, 2010, 11:54:50 pm »

Hi,

I love your JRiver media center but there are 2 issues which I wasn't able to resolve:

1) When I want to play a DVD which is ripped into a directory in the hard disk there is no way to direct the player to that directory. Not to a specific vob file but to the whole directory.
2) When playing a file with sound which is not regular stereo (IE dts/AC3) I get video but no sound. Playing the same file with VLC player does play the sound so I believe it's an issue of configuring JRiver player to decode dts/AC3.
    How is it done ?

Thanks

Try installing CCCP for #2.  Read the DirectShow Guide on MC's Wiki page.

For #1, if you've imported the files, the DVD should show up in MC.  You shouldn't have to find a VOB in a directory.

Whatever I tried doesn't help....  ?

Apparently  I have a problem playing any audio that is embedded in DVD MP2.
I did the following experiment:

1. I made sure I play MP2 with plain  DVD_LPCM_AUDIO (used gspot.exe to verify that)
2. In "FFDSHOW audio decoder configuration" I made sure LCPM is enabled.
3. What ever audio I try, my Media Center 15 does not play MP2 sound. I see video but audio is mute.
4. The problem only shows up when using Media Canter 15. Any other apps are OK.
5. My media center 15 does play audio in non MP2 video (mkv files, mp3, wav etc.) . The only problem is with MP2 Audio.

Please help ! I paid money for this program and it doesn't work for me.

I need to correct myself...
I get no audio in any movie format when using JRiver media center (other programs do have audio in all movie formats).
I do get audio when playing music files with media center.
I installed CCCP.

It is not clear what you mean by LPCM & MP2. Do you mean LPCM audio in MPEG container or MPEG-1 Audio Layer II in any container (.vob, .mpg, etc)?

Quote
used gspot.exe to verify that

Gspot is old and does not detect all formats. You could try Mediainfo for checking the file contents:
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en
A portable version that does not require installation is available here:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MediaInfo

If the audio stream is in the MPEG-1 Audio Layer II format you can enable it in the FDDShow audio decoder settings.

Note that it happens in any video format that contains any audio format. Not just MP1 and MP2. I verified again with MediaInfo.
By the way...I have windows 7.

Is this site the official support for JRiver ?
I'm surprised to find that such a fundamental problem has no answer ...

No audio for any video on windows 7

I don't have any problems with DVD audio on Windows 7. Propably your problem is just a configuration issue.

More info is needed to solve the problem:

1. What exactly is the file format? What program did you use for ripping the DVDs? Have you ripped the DVDs in the original format to VIDEO_TS folders (that contain a bunch of files) _or_ have you converted them to single video files? In the latter case, what is the format?

2. You have not answered my question about the format of the audio track. Is it uncompressed PCM, AC3/DTS, or MPEG 1 Audio Layer II (aka MP2)? If you have various formats that don't work we could first try to solve the problem with your most common format.

3. So you have tried MediaInfo, but could you also post what it tells about the formats? It should be able to show exactly the included stream formats (in .vob, .mpg, avi, mkv, etc file types)

4. When you are playing a video that does not have sound right-click the display to open the right-click menu and select: DirectShow Filters > Copy graph info to clipboard. Post the info here.

5. Anything else that might help to help you...

Bear in mind that the people with the best answers may live in a different time zone to you and maybe a sleep ;-)
I also play DVD's all the time with no Audio problems, but it sounds like Alex has more detailed questions for you here.

Yes, it's official support.  You could read the thread called "Is this support?" at the top of this board.

Thanks for the reply Gentlemen,

1)  I use DVD shrink to rip the DVD.
It is in VIDEO_TS folders with VOB files as main media files.

2)+3)  Media_info output for all files in the DVD at the end of this post. I tried to play all audio types in this DVD including PCM, to no avail.

4)  Filter Graph Info:

    Filter 'Nero Digital Audio Decoder'
        CLSID: {138130AF-A79B-45D5-B4AA-87697457BA87}
        Host: c:\program files (x86)\common files\ahead\dsfilter\neaudio.ax
        Input Pin 'Digital Audio In'
Connected to pin 'AC3' of filter 'DVD Navigator'
Major type MEDIATYPE_DVD_ENCRYPTED_PACK  Sub type MEDIASUBTYPE_DOLBY_AC3, Format type FORMAT_WaveFormatEx
        Output Pin 'Digital Audio Out'

The output pin of Nero Digital Audio Decoder is not connected to an audio renderer.  That is why you do not get audio.

It appears that Nero Digital Audio Decoder does not like the audio renderer that we try to connect to it.  Please try the following:

1.  In Tools > Options > Video, check which audio output mode is selected.  It is under "Audio for Video, DVD, and Television",  "Playback Device".  You can try different devices from the list.  The first one is "Same as device used in audio playback".

2.  Use a different audio decoder.  The option is also at Tools > Options > Video, under "Decoders, Renderers, & More (select file type to configure below)".  First select the file type "DVD Video (ifo, vob)", then select one filter from "Audio decoders" drop down list.  If the list does not contain much choice, you should consider installing some free DirectShow filters.  CCCP would be a good option.

Finally I hear music  :)
Now, being an audiophile, I want to listen to all decoders, configure  and decide what sounds best.
In "decoders renderers & more" I define "DVD video (ifo vob)". There are 4 options of decoders.
Here it what I get when setting each option. I attached debug for every option in case of problems:

1).    ffdshow : Works fine !
2).    Automatic : It seem to choose Nero.
3).    Nero :  There is sound but knowing this musical content so well (Ennio Morricone's awsome DVD) I know it can be better.
When I enter configuration => properties and make a change there is no option to "apply". It's grayed out. Why ?

1).    ffdshow : Works fine !

FFDShow is a fine choice for AC3 and DTS decoding.  I would just use FFDShow.

3).    Nero :  There is sound but knowing this musical content so well (Ennio Morricone's awsome DVD) I know it can be better.
When I enter configuration => properties and make a change there is no option to "apply". It's grayed out. Why ?

So Nero did connect to "Default DirectSound Device".  At least that is good to know.  The quality issue is a Nero one.  I assume the Apply button you referred to above is Nero's.  We only display the property pages of filters if they offer them, but how they really work is out of our control.

4).    Microsoft DTV DVD Audio decoder. When choosing this option MC15 downloaded some software and rebooted the PC.
When playing the content again there was no sound. why ?

Microsoft DTV DVD Audio decoder does not actually decode AC3 Audio in non-Microsoft applications, such as MC.  It only offer SPDIF pass through.  Therefore you should not use it unless your audio output is fed into a external hardware decoder (amplifier/receiver) that is capable of AC3 decoding.

If you do not tell MC that you have such passthrough setup, MC assumes that you do not and tries to replace Microsoft filter with FFDShow filter.  There are two things that did not seem to have worked correctly and are mysteries.

Mystery one: MC should not have rebooted your system.  It appears that your already have installed CCCP, and therefore FFDShow.  MC should just silently replaced MS filter with FFDShow.
Mystery two: After MC successfully replaced MS filter with FFDShow decoder (your graph info indicates that it was successful), your got no audio, while you did get audio if you selected FFDShow directly.

Are you running Windows 7?  Did you log onto your system as an administrator?

OK Yaobing, I might as well use ffdshow option.
If other programs (Microsoft media player) also use the same ffdshow decoder how come  MC 15 produces better sound ?
I found MC 15 sound stage is clearer. The separation between instruments is better and the dynamics of the music is much more fun to listen to.
