Listening to an audio book
« on: November 28, 2010, 08:25:25 am »

Thinking about using MC instead of MPC-HC to listen to audio books. The only stop - MC doesn't preserve playing position on app restart. Please add this to wish list (or point me to some workaround).

If you set the field "Media Sub Type" to Audiobook or if you set the field "Use Bookmarking" to Yes, MC will remember the last last played position. I prefer the "Use Bookmarking" method because I like my audiobooks to behave like music tracks on an iPod (ie. I don't like iPod behavior with multitrack audiobooks).

Great, thanks!
Could you also point me to the detailed info about possible values of Media Sub Type field?

It's a field you can display in any view.  It has pre-set values you choose from.

I see :) But I'm wondering if there is any special handling for these predefined values, like with activating bookmarking when it is set to Audiobook?

As far as I know there is no published info on the behavior for each allowed value in Media Sub Type. They are primarily for internal use by MC. There have been many requests over the years to enhance the use of this field but we have given up on this request and now use custom fields to achieve our desired results.

Some of the Media Sub Type behavior has been reverse engineered here:

And here for how the iPod responds:

Well, I've set Sub Type = Audiobook, Use Bookmarking = Yes. Hurray, it works. Then I added Bookmark field to Tag pane, reset bookmark for some fields and now it is not working. Changed Use Bookmarking from Yes to No and then back - it didn't help.
Any advices? Bug?

You may need to be clearer on what you mean by "it does not work". I'm guessing that you play a little, then when you come back MC does not resume where you left off. This is probably caused by you not letting it play long enough. MC requires you to play for a minute or so (plus some other fancy conditions which I forget) before it saves a bookmark. Idea is to weed out anything that should not be interpreted as a legitimate bookmark.

And to clarify to avoid extra work for yourself, you only need to set one of Media Sub Type or Use Bookmarking. No need to set both.

You're right, I was playing a little. But in my first tries I did the same actions and it put bookmark even for 3 seconds. But now - really, only for a minute or so. These additional conditions seems to be very fancy :) Anyway -thanks, this behavior satisfies me well (as long as there will be no new surprises ;))
