File Associations in MC16
« on: May 08, 2011, 11:12:59 pm »

I was happily running the latest version of MC15.
I upgraded to 16 and ran it alongside 15.

The windows 7 file associations for my media (mp4, mkv, m2ts...) stayed pointed to MC 15.

MC 16 seemed fine and I got tired of MC 15 opening up when I would select a media file in windows so
I went ahead and deleted MC 15.

Since then I can not get a media file to play in MC 16 when I select it in windows.

I changed the file association in Windows to point to MC16 to no avail.
When I try to change it shows two icons for MC (version info missing)

I've tried both, I've browsed and selected the MC16 .exe

I've set them and reset them multiple times IN WINDOWS from MC to VLC to WMC and back.
I've set them IN MC 16.

When I select a media file in windows, MC 16 will open but the file won't play.

Media files play fine WITHIN MC 16.

PLEASE HELP!

I've set them IN MC 16.

Did you set them using MC 16 under Tools > Options > File Types?

Backup from MC15 (reinstall it if necessary), restore in MC16.  Read carefully when you do.  MC16 can restore settings from MC15.

I re-installed MC15, file associations were able to be switched to it.

I un-installed MC 16 and re-installed it.

Within MC 16, I checked every audio and video file association to be opened with MC 16.

I went back into MC 15 and the file associations were now turned off.

However, when in a Windows folder, when I select a video file and click 'play' MC 15 opens up and plays the file.

In Windows, I select the file's properties and try to change the file association to  MC 16.
It shows two icons for MC, no version listed.
I try both but both are for MC 15.

I went to 'other' and find a bigger icon for MC, no version listed and select it.
Now the file association switches to this one the icon changes not to the 'big' icon but instead gets smaller on a white background.
Instead of 'play' as an option, it shows 'open'.
The same thing happens when I browse for the program and
select Program Files (x86)/J River/Media Center 16/Media Center 16.exe.

When 'open' is selected MC 16 launches but the file will not play.

Changing the file association to other programs, VLC, WMC, MC classic works as it should and the file will open in corresponding program.

I've cleaned the Windows Registry with Glary Utilities between the uninstalls/re installs.

Don't know what else to do...

Thank you for your help

OK It is working!

Thank you for all the help. Your suggestion worked.

I backed up the library in MC15, restored the library settings in MC 16 from that file.

Uninstalled MC 15, ran Glary Utilities to clean registry, rebooted windows 7, ran glary again...
and bang works like a charm again.

I use the boards all the time,
'Long-time listener, first-time caller' sort of thing,

Thanks again
