DSD playback to Oppo
« on: February 02, 2014, 02:33:36 pm »

Yesterday I figured out how to stream FLACs to my Oppo using JRiver.  Today's challenge is streaming DSD files.  I've read the Wiki, but the menus described do not match what is showing on my version of JRiver.  For example, when I go to Tools --> Options --> Audio, I don't see any selection for ASIO or WASAPI.  So I can't follow the instructions given in the Wiki.

I've tried changing the output encoder to DSD / DoP.  I've tried changing the bit streaming to DSD.  Neither option works; both give me error messages.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

DLNA (uPnP) doesn't support streaming of DSD files directly, they would need to be transcoded to PCM.  With SMB sharing you can see DSD files with a Oppo 103/105 series, same with attached storage (thumb, external HDD).

The DoP (DSD over PCM) is used with the USB DAC input on the player if you have a BDP-105D.    The BDP-105 supports only PCM up to 192khz sampling, the 105D supports DSD64, DSD128 with a updated USB DAC interface.   The 103/105 series only allows DSD64 playback from storage or SMB.

OK, thanks.  I think I follow you, but a couple of questions for clarification:

1.  Is DoP (DSD over PCM) a way of transcoding DSD to PCM?  Or is it something different?  If it is a way of transcoding, then I can stream it to the Oppo, right?
2.  I have the Oppo-105.  So I gather the best I can do in playing a DSD file is DSD64.  The album I'm trying to play is Coltrane's A Love Supreme, downloaded from Acoustic Sounds.  How do I know if that's DSD64 or DSD128?

Thanks.  Sorry for what probably seem like very basic questions, but I'm totally a beginner at this stuff.

1) No, its something different.  See http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DSD_Format
The bottom paragraphs pertain to Converting DSD to and from PCM within MC.

2) Yes the best you can do is is play DSD64 from attached storage, or SMB.   The media spec's of Coltrane's A Love Supreme say its DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz which will play back fine on any model.

You can also check out the Unofficial OPPO BDP-103 Frequently Asked Questions at http://watershade.net/wmcclain/BDP-103-faq.html

Hope all this helps. :)

Hi, just curious, when you streamed Flac files through your oppo, do you get any metadata to show up on your TV screen?  I assume you are not transcoding to mp3...I ask because I don't get anything (see my other post) >:(

Today's challenge is streaming DSD files.

I assume you are referring to pushing DSD via UPnP / DLNA? If so, then this topic is being looked at over on the PC forum here http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=86430.0 but as you can see, at the time of writing it seems not yet to have been solved, but I am pretty confident that it will be solved soon on the PC platform, and a bit later on the Mac platform.

Interesting sub-topic,  DSD via UPnP / DLNA would be very attractive to the Oppo crowd if you indeed get it working.  Read the linked thread just now.

DLNA should work in MC with DSD if the device supports it.  You might have to add the file extension in MC's options.

Jim it needs a bit more than that. Bob is working on the topic. See posts on Media Network board and the Beta board. There is definitely a fix in the pipeline..

Good question.  I didn't have my TV on, and I didn't think to check.  I'll give it a whirl in the next day or so and let you know.

After reading a bunch of posts on the Oppo forum, it seems that the oppo doesn't support streaming DSDs via DLNA.  Apparently DSDs can be streamed via SMB, but for now I'm just plugging a thumb drive into the USB port and playing DSDs that way.

No, that statement is wrong. The Oppo BDP-10x does support streaming of DSD (DFF files) via DLNA. Unfortunately the current release of MC could itself not stream DSD DFF to the Oppo, but I just tested a new beta version of MC that works perfectly both for push and pull with the Oppo. So I suppose that this beta functionality will be migrated to a future update of MC that should appear fairly soon...
