What is the best compromise between sound quality and file size?

My handheld supports both WMA and mp3, so I can use either. What have you found is the best sound vs. file size combination. Which encoding and at what bitrate gives the most bang for the buck?

Thanks

LAME MP3 VBR.

More specifically with these LAME commandline switches

"--nspsytune --vbr-mtrh -V1 -mj -h -b96 --lowpass 19.5 --athtype 3 --ns-sfb21 2 -Z --scale 0.98 -X0"

or just "--r3mix" for short.

If you're using MJ 7.2, then download the lame.exe and use MJ's external encoder. If you're using 8.0.206, then use MJ's MP3 encoder, and configure it for those options.

http://r3mix.net

You can find more info about those command line switches I mentioned at that site.

Well, my money is on the WMA.  I used VBR (not the Lame, but Xing and Fraunhofer or however you spell it) and felt that a wide stereo image was more stable with WMA.  Additionally, I thought the high end was also better with WMA.

So my recommendation is to experiment for yourself.
