Author Topic: Can't listen to full file, new songs always start 2-8 seconds early  (Read 3992 times)

I'm hoping someone can help. When playing a song on any playlist, the song that is currently playing will abruptly end anywhere from 2-8 seconds before the end of the file. The next song immediately starts playing. Not just silence at the end of a song, either. It will cut off the end of a fade or a last drum kick, etc. So annoying that I can't listen to music anymore until it is fixed. How can I get MC to play the ENTIRE file before beginning the next one?

Didn't used to do this.

Current settings: switch tracks: standard (gapped)- .9 sec
Do not play silence disabled
Use gapless for sequential enabled

I know that sounds like voodoo, but check if you have a playback range defined in the playback range field of each file. Someone had that problem before, although why the field wasn't empty was never explained!

Call me an idiot, but what's a playback range?

Check: Tools → Options → Audio → Track Change → Do not play silence

I don't call people idiots: I'm Canadian!  ;) ;) ;)

At any rate, if you select a track and alt-click it (or right-click it and select "Tag" in the context menu), you will see the fields (tags) that are embedded in the file. Scroll down (alphabetically) to "Playback Range" it should be empty, but one never knows ...

I tried both ways, enabled and disabled. Same thing. Ends several seconds early and plays the next song.

Funny thing, though... the problem only occurs when songs are added to playlists. If I choose the song from the audio tab and play, it plays fine and moves into the next song normally.

Playback range is empty on the entire library. The plot thickens.

What are your settings under Options->Audio->Track Change?

I'm guessing you have a very lengthy crossfade or gapped fade and "use gapless for sequential album tracks" checked?

Yes on the "use gapless" part, but standard gapped fade at 0.9 seconds.

You might try switching to standard (gapped) 0.1 seconds.

Nope. No joy. Set gapped playback to 0.1 seconds, same thing.

I did notice in the release notes the following statement for .156-
"3. Fixed: Cross-fades could play incorrectly between varying sample rates."

My problem started when I upgraded to that version. Any thoughts?

I immediately noticed weird playlist track change behavior that I had never seen before when upgrading to version .156, and I don't have anything fancy (DSD, etc.). I went back to version .146 (latest stable) and all is well.

I have noticed the same thing beginning with the latest version from playlists.

Playback is 99% flac files (few MP3's and MP4's) if this has anything to do with it.

Seemed to have remedied this by selecting Tools>Options>Audio then deselcting "Play files from memory instead of disk (not zone specific).

So playing files from disk now; not memory.  Had always had this selected before the latest version (19.0.158).  However, it seems some songs cut-off before the end.

Are there disadvantages from playing from disk?

Hope this helps.

Could you describe this in more detail?  The current playlist doesn't depend at all on where it came from, so I'm a little unclear on your message.

I replicated this and linked it in the Beta forum since the issue is also present in the MC20 betas.

This is happening to me too, but I'm only experiencing it when the app switches from a standard definition track to a higher definition track.

I described the issue I'm having here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=90734.0

I suppose a better way to put it is that when songs are added to playlists, it always happens. Mostly played using JRemote off of an iPad. Files are predominantly FLAC, with a few .mp3s and .mp4s thrown in. Bit rates are from 128 to about 5799 and generally vary within albums. Exception are albums bought as .mp3s, which have a constant bitrate throughout.

When played directly from my laptop, the problem will occur when playing from playlists. If I play from the main audio tab, the problem does not occur when playing from one song to the next in the same album. This is what led me to consider bit rate changes and noticed the earlier bug fix. I'm afraid I haven't had a chance to experiment and vary the parameters to really see the whole spectrum of how this happens.

If you have an idea of some test to run, I would be happy to try.

Similar issue with 158, no issue with 155.

When a track ends and the next track is a different format/bitRate, MC skips the last 6 seconds of the track.

That same track if moved so another track of the same album follows it, no problem.

Update to .160 looks like it took care of the problem. Thanks to all for the suggestions and to the MC team for the fix.

It's started up again on me today in version (19.0.161) Windows.

When a FLAC song is followed by an MP3 it stutters, stops for a second and then jumps to the next song about 4 - 8 seconds from the end.  Does it on every transition of this nature.  I have tried not playing from memory (which worked before) and adjusting other playback settings.

Whether a mixed album or playlist the behavior is the same. No problem with back to back FLAC files, only when transitioning to an MP3 file.
