Songs out of order
« on: August 31, 2014, 12:06:00 am »

I've been using J River 19 and I upgraded to 20.

I did a normal install on  C drive which is my normal hard drive and the program works, but I can't get this to install as a portable install on G drive.

I don't have a clue how to get this back into G drive as a portable install And I don't want to start from scratch because I have almost 800 albums and some are doubles and more.

I have had nothing but problems since trying upgrade to 20 from 19. I had 19 installed as a portable install on G drive which is an external hard drive and it was working fine. I installed it and loaded nearly 800 CDs some being doubles and some having as many as 13 CDs in the album so I have a lot of time and effort involved in putting all this music in at this point I've only used it for music playback on the computer I hadn't set it up for photographs or movies, but I was intending to use it to send music to my stereo after I moved.

I downloaded J River 20 and try to install it as a portable install which is what I had and I got a message telling me to reboot the computer and/or uninstall the older version. So I tried rebooting and I got the same message telling me to reboot and/or uninstall the program. So I went to uninstall the program, but there was no uninstall in the menu so I had to delete the older version. When I finally got J River 20 portable installed it wouldn't play the albums and none of the cover art was showing up so I tried to do a normal install on G drive that I tried C drive which is my normal hard drive now this install will play, but all the songs are out of order in every album, but the cover art is there.

All my albums are saved on G drive the external drive and all the cover art is saved on G drive in another program called Music Collector so the albums are still in the computer, but I can't set up J River properly. I have written and asked for support by the way of phone or letting J River take control my computer and fixed the problem, but I'm just being sent to the forum which is it doing the absolutely no good. I was given some information on a portable drive install, but I really don't understand what or how to do this I'm 60 years old no formal computer training, but this is one of the first programs I've not been able to work through and I'm stuck. If anyone has any suggestions that would help me I would sure appreciate it because my only option at this point is to start over again and I really don't want to load all the CDs again! ? So in my opinion there's something wrong with J River 20!

Congratulations on reaching 3 score-I'm not far behind.
It sounds like you may have got into a bit of a muddle with your upgrade but I'm sure there are plenty of people on here who can help you get it sorted.
I suggest that you repost your problem as a separate thread so it gets visibility on the forum.
Give it a title like "Help I've got problems upgrading portable version of MC19 to MC20". I have to say I am curious as to why you might be using a portable version, it is usually better to have a normal install especially if you are new to using Media Center.
However you should be able to recover any library information from MC19 from a library backup which should have been automatically taken when you closed MC19 down. I am not at all expert on the portable install as I don't use but I'm sure there are others who do who will be able to help you.
Nil desperandum- MC20 is really very good!

Maybe you have shuffle on.  It's a button in the upper right corner.

I found your old post and moved it here:

Please use that thread for help.

Make sure you have it installed, licensed, and working on C: before trying a portable install.

Why are you doing a portable install?

It's on C  drive now, but the songs are out of order. Since trying to upgrade I haven't been able to install it on G drive my external hard drive and it won't install on C drive properly. It doesn't matter where I tried to install it since upgrading to 20 it won't install properly. I want to use the portable install on my external hard drive G drive so I can use it on different computers.

What are you doing when you see songs out of order?  Where in the program?

Did you try toggling shuffle?

I downloaded J River 20 and try to install it as a portable install which is what I had and I got a message telling me to reboot the computer and/or uninstall the older version.

You can only install a Portable installation of MC using a computer which also has a normally installed and licensed version already installed.  That's how the portable installation gets its license (by looking for the licensed copy of MC20 on the computer used to create the portable installation).  This has always been the way it works, and the same was true of your MC19 installation.

Once you do this, you could conceivably uninstall the "normal" install, though this is probably not recommended for updating reasons.

The portable installation option is designed to be an auxiliary copy of MC that you can carry with you on a USB drive or something similar and use with multiple computers.  It is not designed to be your "primary" copy.  I'm not sure why you chose to make it a portable installation, but if your only goal was to install MC on a drive other than the C drive, there are much better ways to accomplish this (though I'd be curious to hear why, since the install of MC is quite small).

Yes you sent me some information on that and I tried it, but I couldn't resolve the problem.
Personally I don't care if this goes in as a portable install or a normal install on G drive, but I can't get either one to work on G drive or C drive.

When it's installed on G drive all the album show up, but they won't play and there's no cover art regardless of if it's installed as a portable install or a normal install.
When it's installed on C  drive the albums are there and the artwork is there, but the songs are all out of order.
The song being out of order happen to me when I first installed this and the only way I found to fix it was to reinstall it using the CD, but that was when I had 25 CDs in the program not 800. As far as why won't do anything in G drive I don't understand because that's where the original install was and all the albums and cover art are on G drive. None of this makes any sense to me.

Please just answer the questions and leave the rest out.  You're repeating what you've said before, and it makes it harder to find the problem.

Provide a few more details.

Jim you're right I'm repeating the problem, but the problem is that I can't get it to install on G drive and work. So my question is actually in the wrong post.

I didn't want to install this on C drive where the songs being out of order, but I thought I would try installing it on C drive to see if it would work and it does but the signs were out of order.

Don't attempt a portable install.  Install on drive C: and make sure it works.

You shouldn't be using a portable install.

It sounds like a sorting issue.

Ghemrock, on your C: drive install (the one with the album art):

Click the following headings in the order listed:

So click the Track # heading, then the Album heading, and then the Artist heading.

Jim, I have given up the idea the portable install on G drive my external hard drive and have tried a normal installation on G drive and it still does not work.
When that didn't work I thought I would try to install it on C drive and the songs are out of order, but this is not where I want the program I just want to see if it would work on C drive.

My problem is not really that the songs are out of order the problem is that won't install on G drive and work at all.

Sorry if I'm being confusing here I don't know what problem to tackle first. I thought perhaps if I got it working in C drive that I could transfer the file to G drive. Right now I'm just confused with the whole thing and I put a lot of time into trying to get this to work on G drive.

Don't install on drive G.  Install on drive C.

Here's what you don't understand, I think:

Where you install MC has absolutely no bearing on where the media files are stored.  Zero.  None.  You can install MC on drive C and store your music files on drive G.  You can have some of your media files on C and others on G.  And, if you want, some of them could be on one computer and others on a completely different computer served over the network.

MC does not care where the media files are stored, as long as it can access them.

So... Forget about that.  Installing MC on drive G is not needed, and will cause problems.  MC likes to be on a fast disk, and your G drive is probably not a fast disk.
