Rename, Move & Copy - help please
« on: September 28, 2014, 10:13:51 am »

Hello Folks,
I want to use RM&C to move folders from one drive to another.
The folders have my custom narative and I want to retain that folder name on the move.
How can I tell RM&C to use the existing folder name in the new destination location.
thanks,

Are you just looking to replace the Drive letter or UNC path then?

There are maybe two or more ways to achieve this, depending on what exactly you want. If you only want the path to change, and not the filename, you can use the find/replace feature of the RMC utility.
e.g. replace E:\Music\ with F:\Songs, and MC will reproduce the folder structure below E:\Music in F:\Songs. So the file

E:\Music\Abba\Swedish Twerk Compilation\Morning has Broken.mp3

will be moved to

F:\Songs\Abba\Swedish Twerk Compilation\Morning has Broken.mp3

However, if you have other files in those folders that are not in MC's library, or in the current view in Standard View, you would be better off to do the above but FIRST:

Select "Update Database..." for the first drop-down menu in RMC.

Then, manually move all your files to the new location within Windows.

MC will be looking for the files in the new location because you did "Update database..."

thank you fitbrit  :)
I'll give that a try.
I like your helpful hint about the Update database drop down box.

This is confusing  >:(
What is the difference between RMC Update database and Library Tools>Update Library from Tags?

Experiment a little.  Copy a few files and set up a new test library.

">:( " ?!

The Update database is repointing the library to a different path/drive etc.

The second updates Library tag fields  from file tags

The update library from tags is a way to replace the library's metadata with the embedded metadata (tags) from the physical files (eg flac files) you can also do this in reverse by replacing the embedded tags information with the library's.

Your message has impatience and frustration floating between the words.

Think a little. Some of us do not live in your World of IT.
You obviously know the difference between a database and a library.
I am no more than a visitor to the IT world.

JRiver is an advanced application, and requires time and patience to learn its intricacies.

A simple google search of "updating file tags from library" from google would have yielded this (at the very first search result) => http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library_Tools.  All of the poster's question seem to be answered. so

One could infer that the poster is unwilling to learn or perhaps expects that the learning be done for him if it is not immediately obvious. AS such, expressing anger as a perfectly normal, even requisite reaction, could be misconstrued and might provide an explanation as to why some level of frustration could be understandable.

Or

One could infer, as a non-initiate to the IT world,  the poster is unaware that the smiley used indicates anger and is totally unaware of the ambivalence or worse this could elicit.

I chose the later as I have hope in humanity :)

Think a little.
