MC "not responding" - but will respond if wait long enough
« on: January 11, 2015, 07:39:13 am »

EDIT: Changed title - I think my first post and last post are related to the same problem.

New weird problem. Just started when I upgraded to 0.54, but changing back to 0.52 did not fix it.

On my Server set up (Win7 x32), when I open Tools>Options window, I can't close it by clicking on the "OK" button. Whenever I click on OK, I just get the "spinning wait" icon, then the program says "not responding".
Then I have to click on the "X" on the Options box to end (which closes MC completely).

If I open the Options window and hit "Cancel" the window will close properly.
If I hit the "X" it will close properly, but if I hit "OK", even if I don't change any Options, it will still not close and MC will not respond.

If tried rebooting several times and rolled back to version 52 but problem persists. It only does this on the Server. I updated both Clients to 0.54 and do not have this issue.

Apparently something broke on the Server install when doing the 0.54 upgrade. I can go back to a previous System Restore - but I thought I would post here first to see if anyone else has seen this or if anyone has idea. Log attached for what it's worth.

I couldn't wait for anyone to respond, so I just did the System Restore - that fixed the problem. There was a "critical update" auto-installed yesterday (Jan 10) that most likely caused the problem. It was KB2310138 "security essentials" 1.191.2042 and 1.91.2022.
I did a fresh "create restore point" and ran Windows Update again. Then I installed all of those updates (2) and everything is still working correctly.

So, if your reading this now, this is a reminder to Create a System Restore point (and do a backup) while everything is working. Don't wait for a problem then hope you have a current restore point.

I just had a new laptop fail while I was traveling.  It wouldn't boot at all.  Nothing I did would help.  It just seemed very unstable.

I took it to Best Buy when I came home today, hoping they would swap it.  They were very nice about it, impressive really.  Even thought I had forgotten to bring the charger, they just swapped it.  The person who helped said that it was the third time today he had seen the problem.  I said that I have expected, for a long time, that a Windows update would brick computers world wide.  He tried not to smile.

The problem is back. No recent Windows/AV updates (and I've updated to latest version 0.57).

I only see this problem on the Server no the Clients (but I don't spend much time in the Options on the Clients so I can't say for sure the problem is not system wide).

To reiterate, if I open the Tools>Options box and open/look-at some of the settings (I don't need to change a setting for this hang to occur) when I go to close the Options box by clicking on the "OK" button, MC hangs. The "spinning timer icon thingy" will continue to spin until I hit the "X" on the Options box which then says either "wait for program to respond or close program".

If I just open the Options box and then click Ok it closes, everything is fine. But if I go to look any of the settings (like Theater View or Video or Library & Folders, etc.) when I clock "OK" then it hangs.

Don't know what that means, but maybe someone else does.  ;D Maybe if you take out the handheld device that is not reposnding it would allow you to close the option box correctly? I'd uninstall JRiver and reinstall/restore your library if you haven't done that already too, but I'm no expert

Re: Can't close Tools> "Options" box - causes MC to not respond
« Reply #5 on: January 18, 2015, 11:04:39 am »

I noticed that when I am moving (using Rename, Move & Copy tool) a group of files, MC will go into a "Not Responding" mode. If I click on the program or try to do anything, the Windows "program not responding" message comes up. I can "close program" at that point. BUT if I wait long enough MC will finish the "moving files" task, then an acceptance box pops up, and the process finishes.

So MC was not really hung. It was just that I could not access the program while it was working in the background. However, MC doesn't do this on my other computers.

This screen shot shows "MC not responding" but in the Resources view there are files being moved per my instruction. Once these files finish moving, MC becomes responsive.
