Stutter/Skip Issues with JRiver 19 and 20
« on: March 03, 2015, 02:38:24 pm »

Hello !

I'm a long time JRiver user(going back to version 18 for Windows).  As of late, I've been having problems with MC 19 where there is a delay of about 4 seconds when starting up a music piece and or during  play. The issue is not systematic (not on every start) but occurances increase with time of use or if I am going from one album to the next.  I upgraded to MC20 hoping that would solve the problem.

Hardware does not seem to be the culprit as I have the same problem whether I'm using the ASIO drivers provided for use with the TEAC UD-501 external DAC or my Asus  Xonar Essence STX internal card and MC19 and MC 20 crash when using WASAPI drivers.

Thanks in advance for the advise!

Your hard disk may need to spin up.

Not quite sure what you mean by this.  The problem does not occur when I use other players (Foobar, TEAC HD Player, Real Player). If it was a hd issue would it not be the case with all (or most) software.

I use ASIO drivers and a Xonar Essence ST sound card on JRiver Media Center and had different stuttering issues. I read on another thread that running JRiver as an administrator can eliminate the stuttering that this combination seems to suffer with. Doing so has certainly fixed my problems.

I wonder if that's an antivirus problem.

ASUS has notoriously bad ASIO drivers. My STX which I don't use anymore had poor ASIO performance (e.g. pops, skips, etc.) no matter what buffer or settings was used when opening web browsers (Google Chrome) and doing simple tasks. I'd recommend using WASAPI when using an ASUS sound card honestly, less hassle to deal with. Fortunately my current USB DAC works great with ASIO set with a 3ms buffer. :D

Thanks everyone.  Perhaps a better description (English is not my native language)  is that JRiver 'freezes' for 3 to 4 seconds.   For reasons I can't explain,  opening the software as an Administrator seems to have solved the issue at least for now.  Twenty minutes of listening without a glitch!   Keeping my fingers crossed!

MC 20 freezes again after an hour of listening. Tried to load up another ASIO driver (foobar_dsd_asio) to no success. Just about given upon the product!

Could you try playing to another device?  That would tell you if the problem is in MC or in your driver or sound device.

Jim,

I've played music files using other software programs (foobar, TEAC Hi-Res Player,Real Player) on either the external DAC (Teac UD-501) or the internal sound card (Asus Essence STX).   The time I have these type of "freezes" is when using MC19 or MC20.  Too bad because I truly enjoy using the Program.

I'm sorry, but there isn't a freezing problem with JRiver.  But I see you aren't convinced.

...and MC19 and MC 20 crash when using WASAPI drivers.

That's strange. Do the other programs crash if they use WASAPI?
