System info bug
« on: August 12, 2003, 02:57:08 pm »

Some people have reported the "System info..." window does not work. We are gettig a message box saying that "An invalid argument was encountered".

It occurs with the latest versions.

I am using XP Professional, 256 MB, Spanish version, with all updates. My files are located in a external drive. I have not a CD writer.

I guess it could help to know who else is getting this issue.

Sorry I dont copy my system info  ;)

I notice I have a "Nero Fast Burning Plug-In" inside "Send To/CD,DVD & Handhelds" item. I dont know what this plug-in is.

I dont know if it could be related.

It's me again. I did another test:

My computer has 2 partitions, the other one runs over Windows 2000 Server (English). I installed MC on that partition, and I tried to access to system info. It crashed.

On that partition, "Nero Fast Burning Plug-In" does not appear.

This error message appeared in version 226. Here are the fixes you informed about then. It may help:

1. Changed: Album grouping no longer adds files, so a search for "Blowin' in the Wind" gives one instead of the entire album. (use ~a for full albums)
2. Fixed: It could take a long time to manually switch from an audio to a video track.
3. Fixed: Dual playback (images + audio) didn't work properly with images located on a CD.
4. Changed: MC now allows dual playback (images + audio) even if there are videos in playing now.
5. Changed: Position slider bar height now selected by the skin.
6. Fixed: Media Center was not woking with MIDI files.
7. Fixed: If a handheld failed to initialize, it left a dead right-view.
8. Fixed: In-place editing in panes didn't properly handle dates.
9. Fixed: Location based view schemes didn't work properly with CD files.
10. Fixed: Adding / deleting from Playing Now could leave playing now with no "current file."
11. Fixed: Media Center was incorrectly giving "Failed to load WMDM device" message when attempting to initialize some portable devices.
12. Fixed: Acquire images windows was displaying wrong dialog when Select button was pressed.

I think it something about hardware. I have two machines, one works, one doesn't.

The machine that does not show system info has two partitions (with Win XP, and with W2K). It doesnt work in any partition. software and configuration is quite different in these partitions.

Here some people who reported the same error:

It would be nice if you didn't refer to it as an MC bug until you know what causes it.  Your other "bug" turned out to be a problem with file associations left by uninstalling another program.

Maybe you could ask the other people in the other threads who report similar problems to join the discussion here to see if you can pin down what you have in common.

It could be our bug, but it could be someone else's.

I get it as well.

I didn't get the problem back in .226 (i *think* .226 was the last build when it worked, but it's possible I'm wrong. Definately the last 2 haven't worked), and I don't think any software or plugins have been installed since to screw things up.

I'm running winXP Pro. Only one hard-drive, with one partition, although it's on a network and some of the media files are located on other machines in the network. Pentium 1.3ghz, 256mb Ram. Other than the network thing I can't thing of anything special about the machine.

Where did I said it was a MC bug?

Anyway, I think it is. MC tries to inform about my system, and it is not able to. If it is caused by my machine, MC could inform about that: "Polonio, your system is out of date, update CD-ROM parity, and free some hard disk space to allow boolean bits recollection... By the way, Polonio, you own a PIII 1.3 GB, and your music taste is terrible....". But MC does not inform that way. It says: "An invalid argument was encountered". Did I ask MC to look for an invalid argument? I asked for my system info!!!

I dont know if you see my point...

It seems MC is just as your own child. I didn't want to offend you.

I am having the problem on both of the machines I run
MC on. I get the "an invalid argument was encountered" every time I try and get the system info box. Both of my machines run XP. Let me know if there is something I can do to get you more information. This was a new problem in the build I first reported it and stopped working on both machines at the same time.

I get something.

I have a external DVD+RW which I normally do not connect to the USB port. In this situation, MC does not show system info.

However, I just connected the DVD+RW into my laptop, and... voilá:

Polonio> Try disconnecting the device, openning MC, go to Options->CD Burner and hit the Detect button. Then run System Info.

MC may be trying to poll a device that it thinks you still have connected.

Hey Polonio, try the next build. There was a bug when no cd burners were on the system. Laertes should have fixed that for you  :P
