CD Burning Errors
« on: January 26, 2003, 05:59:28 pm »

I’ve been having many problems burning audio and data CD’s, but esp. data CD’s which fail far more often in burning than they succeed. CDRWin has performed the same tasks (audio and data) without any problems. I use Windows 98SE with the latest aspi version installed. (I also experienced these same kinds of problems with MJ when I had older versions of aspi installed.)

My CD burner is a Plextor 8/4/32 PX-W8432Ti. I am using the latest firmware and drivers. My CD-ROM settings are as per the MJ FAQ for Windows 98. I am using the latest version of MJ8.

Here are some of the errors I have been receiving:

Using the non-generic driver
1. Error: Unexpected Error Reading File Cache
File/Disc read error encountered

2. Error: ‘Write’ Command failed on device 0:1:0
Read/Write error or bad medium detected (04h 00h 02h 03h 0ch 09h)

Using the generic driver:
3. A device error occurred
Error number is 1022
Error data is: KEY: 24 ASCQ:0

I have read through several of the posts which discuss similar errors and have tried several solutions, including: 1) trying to burn less data; 2) switching on the generic driver; 3) toggling DMA (my Plextor manual says it should be on for fastest performance, but having it turned off hasn't been a problem with CDRWin); and 4) switching off unnecessary background processes.

MJ crashes frequently when I use it to work with my CD-ROM drives generally (e.g. general protection faults when burning). I have never had problems with other programs that use my CD-ROM drives for similar tasks. When DMA is enabled on my CD-ROM drives, MJ gets caught in an “analyzing devices” loop. My computer crashes rarely and generally seems healthy. MJ seems steady otherwise (except for DupFinder, which crashes MJ a lot).

JohnT, is there anything you can say that might help here? Anyone else been down the same road?

Thanks for any help you can give.

It sounds like buffer under-runs are occurring. To prove/disprove this, try burning at half the speed you are currently using (or even at 2X). When using the non-generic burner, you could try adjusting the buffer size on the burn options page (maybe try 2, 4, and 8 MB). Have "test mode" checked while you do the tests to avoid ruining CD's.

For the non-generic burner, this is the recommended setup:
WINDOWS 95/98 DEVICE SETTINGS

 1) Open the "Control Panel" folder and click on the "System" icon.

 2) Select the "Device Manager" tab.

 3) Click on the CDROM icon

 4) For each CDROM device in the list...
      Select the device.
      Select the "Settings" tab.
        Enable the "Disconnect" option.
Enable the "Sync Data Transfer" option.
Disable the "Auto Insert Notification" option.
Disable the "DMA" option (if available).
      Click on "OK"

What model of CD burner do you have?

Have you thought about trying the Media Center 9 beta version? It has a completely new burning engine.

My CD burner is a Plextor 8/4/32 PX-W8432Ti.

Tried buring at 1X. Still crashes.

About half the time I try to do anything in the burning dialogue, MJ crashes. Been through the "burning tips" set of suggestions. No crashes with CDRWin doing the same operations.

I can't locate the buffer options you refer to. Maybe you're talking about "Device Settings, Audio CD, Copy Mode" where there are some buffer settings? In any event, would this affect burning of data CD's where MJ crashes on me basically all the time?

Thanks for trying to help.

Are you saying it crashes while you are changing settings in the burn dialog, or does it crash during the burn process? If it's in the burn dialog, there may be a video or skinning issue. Try turning off skinning and/or updating your video drivers.
If it's during the burn process, does it crash or does it give you the error messages you mentioned above?

It often fails during burns and gives the error messages I noted above.

Also, MJ often crashes while performing operations when the "Burn CD" pane is up on the right side of the screen. This is the type of error where the dialogue box gives the choice of ignoring or closing. Ignoring doesn't tend to be a practical option. Once I get this message, I know I need to reboot b/c more crashes are in store if I try to do any more work with burning.

Skinning has always been off. Video drivers are updated.

Thanks.

Here's some more info that may or may not be related to the errors I've noted above. I expect there's no connection, but here's a go anyway.

When burning data CD's, I sometimes get the error that says, in essence, that the amount of data is too big for ISO 9660. This error occurs even when MJ says I'm 50MB - 100MB under the CD capacity (burning, for example about 70 - 95 files). From reading other posts, I know that MJ has some issues here and may need more space than it says it needs.

I should emphasize that this particular error comes up relatively infrequently compared to the errors I have mentioned.

In any event, once I get this error, even if I try to burn a data disc with only 50MB of data in total, I still get the same ISO error.

Still hoping that MJ can be the total package for me.  :)

I think Media Center 9 might be the best bet for you. It has an entirely new burning engine that lets you do cross-fades, volume leveling, audio effects and other cool stuff for audio CD burning. It's our own engine so we can make bug fixes quickly.
If you try it, back up all your MJ stuff first in case you decide to go back, the database format is not compatible. Also, use build 9.0.105 since the current 106 build has problems.

For version 8, I'd recommend uninstalling everything and reinstalling if you haven't already done that. Let the uninstall remove the registry entries for you.
