Tagging issue
« on: June 29, 2017, 07:00:09 pm »

Please help me. I dont understand how to modify tags with JRiver.
I need to fill the "Total Tracks" and "Total Disks" fields to manage my inventory.
Last year, everything was working fine by since the end of 2016 (around the introduction of 22.21), the "Total Tracks", "Total Disks" information is not transferred to the file and I am constantly loosing the information.
If I manipulate the file and reload it in JRiver, the information is lost.
It seams like the information is stored in <TOTAL DISKS> and <TOTAL TRACKS> but JRiver upload the information from "Total Disks" and "Total Tracks" which are completely different fields in the tags.

Is it something I am doing wrong ?

Example from Foobar 2000:

Artist Name : David Gilmour

I'm not familiar with those fields, but tag names must match exactly, including case.

I understand Jim. When I update the tags "Total Tracks" and "Total Disks" in JRiver and I do an "Update Tags (from library)" it is JRiver that is writing the information in the file.

This is an example it worked (in november 2016):

Artist Name : Santana
Track Title : «multiple values» Batuka; No One to Depend On; Taboo; Toussaint L'Overture; Everybody's Everything; Guajira; Jungle Strut; Everything's Coming Our Way; Para los Rumberos
Album Title : Santana III

The fields <TOTAL DISKS> and <TOTAL TRACKS> are not updated in the last example.
Is it possible that JRiver is not transferring the information to the file ?

All of the files you've posted seem to be FULL ALBUMS inside of single files.  What format are these?  Are you using CUE sheets or something?

Albums as single files seem to be problematic; I would recommend against them.  FLAC files for each individual track seem to be totally reliable and consistent.

Hello Brian,
No they are individual files. I am using Foobar 2000 to show the content of the tags of a complete album. Mainly the "Total Tracks" and "Total Discs" fields.
I should have used a single track for more clarity.

I guess, I will have to use Foobar 2000 to edit the tags of my albums. It is unfortunate because, JRiver is a lot more user friendly.

1.  What format are these files?
2.  What are  you trying to do with tagging?  Use these files in another program outside of MC?

All my albums are in flac files and I am using JRiver since load 17.

I am using JRiver "Analyse Audio" to update Peak Level and Volume Level.
I also edit Album Title, Genre and other fields and it is working fine.

This example is 16 bits - 48 kHz and edited with JRiver 22.0.110

Artist Name : Santana
Track Title : Yambu
Album Title : Santana IV
Date : 2016
Genre : Rock
Composer :
Performer :
Album Artist : Santana
Track Number : 1
Total Tracks :
Disc Number : 1
Total Discs :
Comment :
<BPM> : 96
<COPYRIGHT> : (P) 2016 Santana IV Records
<DYNAMIC RANGE (DR)> : 8
<DYNAMIC RANGE (R128)> : 4.7850198745727539
<PEAK LEVEL (R128)> : +1.1 dBTP; +1.1 Left; +1.1 Right
<PEAK LEVEL (SAMPLE)> : -0.2 dB; -0.2 Left; -0.2 Right
<TOOL NAME> : Media Center
<TOOL VERSION> : 22.0.110

<VOLUME LEVEL (R128)> : -12.1742000579833984
<VOLUME LEVEL (REPLAYGAIN)> : -7.1742000579833984

This older example was modified with JRiver at the end of 2016 when I was with load 22.0.18
This one is in flac 16 bits - 44.1 kHz

Artist Name : Santana
Track Title : Toussaint L'Overture
Album Title : Santana III
Date : 2014
Genre : Rock
Composer :
Performer :
Album Artist : Santana
Track Number : 4
Total Tracks :
Disc Number : 1
Total Discs :
Comment :
<BPM> : 106
<DYNAMIC RANGE (DR)> : 12
<DYNAMIC RANGE (R128)> : 4,0215201377868652
<PEAK LEVEL (R128)> : -1,1 dBTP; -2,0 Left; -1,1 Right
<PEAK LEVEL (SAMPLE)> : -1,1 dB; -2,1 Left; -1,1 Right
<TOOL NAME> : Media Center
<TOOL VERSION> : 22.0.18
<TOTAL DISCS> : 1
<TOTAL TRACKS> : 9

<VOLUME LEVEL (R128)> : -8,6867599487304688
<VOLUME LEVEL (REPLAYGAIN)> : -3,6867599487304688

To help me, can you take an album where the fields "Total Tracks" and "Total Discs" are empty.
Update those fields with JRiver.
Move the album to a different directory / different disc and re import the album in JRiver.
The content of those two fields will not upload because they were not transferred to the file.

On my work computer, I have a copy of most of my music from home.  I just did a straight import, directly from the FLAC files.  So all of the metadata in the files on this computer definitely came from the FLAC files.

I just checked and I have albums which have both Total Tracks and Total Discs populated.  So I'm pretty sure my home copy of MC is saving these tags to the FLAC files.

However, you may not be aware that MC has an option PER TAG of whether or not that tag gets saved into files.  You should look at this setting for the tags you are interested in like [Total Tracks] .

Tools > Options > library & folders > manage library fields > (find your field) > data > save in file tags when possible > (should be checked to save in file)

Good luck!
