Simple, potentially nooby question:

We now have lossless/hi-fi music stores like Bandcamp, HDtracks, Qobuz, and the like, right? We also have services like the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, and the Xbox Live Marketplace for video games--which are trending towards PC cross-play these days.

Are there similer services for films and TV shows that allow one to purchase and download--not just stream--digital copies in FHD or better? Or are we still stuck in cloud streaming land?

I wouldn't mind selling the bulk of my video library in the interest of down-sizing if I can expect to have something similar to Bandcamp for movies. Quality video storage shelving is expensive and takes up living and bed room space.

On a related note, are there any companies who manufacture home theatre equipment (basically, speakers and a/v receivers) that sound awesome at a smaller form factor? I know quality audio(phile) equipment tends to be humongous--I own the Polk Monitor series--but if I can get some equivalence out of something smaller, that'd be grand.

In regards to video, we're probably stuck in cloud streaming land with all the magical (and ever more invasive as time passes) DRM, sadly. Audio? Not so much (unless you count MQA as a DRM of sorts, which I do). I remember Apple started out adding DRM to their music downloads a decade ago, but eventually they stopped doing that and went DRM-free. I haven't seen any DRM on music downloads in a long, long time. Video? That's a different beast altogether due to all the piracy and DRM, especially on physical media (which hasn't happened to music CDs in a decade). I would be *highly* surprised if a legit store started with DRM-free video downloads of mainstream films and TV shows. But... there are sites, like Vimeo, where you can get DRM-free downloads of video content from the creators themselves, e.g. it's good for some documentaries and stuff like that. Overall though, I just don't see that happening for mainstream films and TV shows. So no, I don't think it'll happen to video like it has for audio.

Unless, of course, you're one of those types who purchases physical media (e.g. DVDs, Blu-rays and/or UHD Blu-rays) and rip those and put them on a NAS or something like that. Which, looking at your post above, doesn't seem to me like you are.

I am, actually. I have a fairly extensive video library. It'd just be nice if I could digitise it and sell it off like I can my music. [emoji14]

Well, in my mind the problem with doing that is it's basically considered piracy if you're ripping the physical media (video or audio) and and then reselling the physical media while keeping possession of a rip. I know the chance of being caught doing this is pretty small, in my opinion it's not worth the (very small) risk of reselling the physical media and keeping rips.

Another thing to consider is what if you lose all your data (and your backup solutions fail too)? If you still have the physical media you can simply re-rip everything all over again. Still having the physical media after losing data is what saved my bacon a few years back and it's why I still keep physical media around in storage.

You pretty much do, if you want an archive without doubling your storage infrastructure.

For what I am hoping is a Bandcamp-like (or whatever) service for movies, where-in you (legally) purchase a download of a given film that you can store on your HDD and access locally, within your home network. If you happen to lose your copy, you simply go back to the online store/service from which you purchased it and re-download it. Easy peasy.

The non-existence of such a service is the entirety of why I retain a physical media library and will continue to do so for archiving purposes until the market squares this away. It's annoying, but it is what it is.
