APE and ID3v2 tags
« on: May 23, 2003, 10:28:01 am »

I've been playing with Media Center 9 because I want to use it with netremote.  I like it a lot so far but all of my music is in Monkey's Audio format and tagged with ID3v2 and ID3v1.1 tags.  Media Center refuses to read the ID3v2 tag even if I strip out the ID3v1.1 tag.  '

I've also noticed that if I edit the tag once I load the file into my music library it writes an APE tag to the end of the file to handle the longer song names.  Wouldn't it be preferable to use the ID3v2 format since at least it's somewhat a standard?

Any suggestions?  I don't want to change to ripping in Media Center because I believe that EAC is the best ripper out there.

Thanks,
Tim

ID3v2 and ID3v1.1 tags on APE files

That's bad.  APE never supported ID3v2.  Any software tagging them with ID3v2 is buggy.

APE has it's own flexible tagging format, which MC fully supports. (APE Tags)

APE files will play with ID3v2 tags on the front of them (for the time being).  It is still not "officially" supported.

I'd use Media Center to rip to APE in digital secure -- probably more secure than EAC in that mode.  That way the tags will be written correctly.

Otherwise, I think the newest EAC won't allow this mistake anymore.

Take care.

I use EAC and APE files and have no problems with tags (that I know of).

Can you give more info about what you are doing and what you think is not working?  I might have a problem that I don't even know about that I could be worrying about.

I seem to learn more about MC all the time.

Matt-

Obviously, you're the man, so you would definitely know.   ;D  I am confused though by the version history posted here:  http://www.monkeysaudio.com/versionhistory.html

So you really think that the digital secure mode in MC 9 is just as good though?  If so, I have no issues just switching to that.  My biggest concern was being able to batch encode stuff from APE to other formats for car and other devices that don't support APE (and keep my tags straight) and it looks like MC 9 will let me do that.

Thanks,
Tim

gkerber-

My problem is that a lot of my CDs have longer song names than the 30 bytes supported by ID3v1.1, so i end up with something like "this is my long song na.." instead of the full name.  Files play just fine though.

I think EAC will generally write ID3 tags to just about any format of audio file if you don't disable (uncheck) all of the ID3 options in the Compression Options (F11). If the ID3 options are disabled, then EAC will automatically use APE tags for Monkey's.
