Critical error encountered....catastrophic failure

I have  resurrected JR Media center now that closed captions are working on TV.  The captions worked just fine, but the recording had begun to not work and now the entire program will not do anything without displaying the message "Critical error encountered.  error message:  catastrophic failure", and then it shuts down.  Afterward it tells me, "if the problem persists to back up the library, remove the program, reboot, reinstall the program, reinstall library".  I did that (except it would not let me back up the library), and the problem persists.  Thoughts?

You didn't say what platform or OS version you are running on. But update all your drivers, for everything.

At a minimum:
Tuner
Graphics Card
Motherboard: Audio, Hard Drives, etc.

Reboot lots.

If that doesn't work:
Have you been using other PVR software on that PC?
Have you completely shut down any other software using the tuner, including Services that run in the background?

Basically, a driver problem is what usually gives you such errors, not MC itself. So try to remove all other causes by updating drivers and making sure no other software is conflicting with MC using those drivers.

If all else fails, tell us all about your PC and the software you use on it.

  Running JRiver for Android, JRemote2, Gizmo, & MO 4Media on a Sony Xperia XZ Premium Android 9.
  Playing video out to a Sony 65" TV connected via HDMI, playing digital audio out via motherboard sound card, PCIe TV tuner

What type of tuner?  If it is external (USB or network), try power down the tuner to reset.

Another reason for such error is the device driver.  Try updating, either from Microsoft or from device maker.  Sometimes Microsoft will tell you you have the latest driver, but the manufacturer may have something newer.
