Changing a tag to blank

I find that when I change a tag (e.g. composer) to blank that MC does not seem to accept the change and instead reports whatever the previous value of the tag was. What us the easiest way to force the tool to accept the new blank value?

Are you connected to a server? MC needs authentication set on the server in order to change tags from the other machine.
