Windows 11 crashes all versions of MC.
« on: December 11, 2024, 05:46:50 pm »

Sorry for all the posts. I'm just trying to get this right.

New install of Windows 11 (currently on 26100.2605, version 24H2). Purchased new license for MC33, and restored from library backups MC17 and 21 (what can I say-it's hard to let go).

I grab files from several hard drives to rebuild my 50k file database, which has never been a problem before. Here's what is happening:

Every time I try to launch a version of Media Center (usually 33, but this also happens with the other two), I get the spinning wheel of death, followed by a white screen and the dreaded "windows has to close this program" dialogue. Then after it goes through all of the mishegoss to finally close, when I try to open it again, I get the equally dreaded "Problem Running Media Center 33" dialogue. The only thing that solves this is to reboot. And then all is well. Except that if I leave MC open and come back to it later, the same blue spinning wheel and all the rest of the behavior previously noted.

Help! This never happened with Windows 10. Truly at a loss to figure this out. To be honest, it would be worth it to revert back to Win10 if that's what it takes, but it shouldn't! I just want to listen to some g-d music!

Configure Windows Defender.  Don't run any other antivirus.

Wait.  Don't assume it's hung.

Or does it actually get terminated by Windows?

I don't have any other anti virus except for WD. I don't know how to configure WD to allow MC to open without issue.

The Windows dialogue gives me a choice, kill or wait. I've waited. And waited. And waited. It never comes back. So I choose to kill it. And then, as I said, I get the "There was a problem" dialogue.

So I guess I'm the killer. But I have no choice...

I added several MC folders to the WD exceptions list. We'll see how that goes.

Adding all of MC's files to the exclusion list did not work. Windows still will not open the program unless I restart, and then after a while, will not respond, and then I have to force close it. Hopefully I didn't throw away $25.

If your Win 11 WD Ransomware Protection settings have Controlled Folder access enabled, I suggest that you check in the WD Protections History for any blocked items listed and allow any version of JRiver Media Center that you have installed. Once you do and reboot, try again to see if things work better.

There was nothing in the protections section.

Please enable logging in MC (Help->Logging menu), reproduce the problem, then share the zipped log file here.
Some networking issues can cause this. Do you use a NAS? Check if your network card is set to Public or Private/Home profile.
