Revamping the Forum
« on: December 14, 2003, 09:51:04 pm »

ive used mediacenter for a while and just as much the forum.  however, finding the right information in the forum can prove hard, the search is very limited.  i propose that the "Media Center 9" section of the forum should be divided into subsections such as:

"New Builds, Version Info, (Un)Installation, Licenses"
"Interface"
"View Schemes and Sorting"
"Plug-Ins"
"iPod and Handheld Devices"
"Visualizations"
"Wishlists"
"Burning and Ripping CDs"
"Hairstyle and TV Connectivity"
"Audio Fine-Tuning"
"Tagging and Media Information"
"Miscellaneous Errors and Other Technical Issues"
"Other MC Applications-Media Scheduler, Media Server, Media Editor etc."
"Other"

With this revamping, the search feature may also be changed slightly, you should be able to search within one of these subtopics.  Also, when posting, the poster chooses the sub-category that the thread goes in.  This thread would probably be in the "Wishlists" subcategory.  I think this would benefit anyone who uses this forum, meaning you.  thanks for reading!

Amen!  It's overwhelming trying to keep up with the forums here, much less finding specific information!  I'd much rather some subforums be built!

I would like to see an off topic and a wishlist forum be added. If you get too many, then there's a lot of clicking around to see what's happening and someone with an answer probably wouldn't see the question being asked.

The forum search function isn't very flexible.  Would be nice if it could offer more search options eg complete words only.

It currently picks out matching patterns which returns lots of unwanted results.

Hi Marskid . . .
your idea is not without merit, however I expect that doing such a breakup and compartmentalization would probably cause more problems than it corrected.
It is quite frequently seen that a post is in the wrong place with so few choices, that having so many would surely cause disorganized mahem & confusion.
Perhaps simply improving the search function would suit the purpose . . .  or if compartmentalized MC9, MC10, O/T may be sufficient.

Try setting the option for "match as phrase".

I don't see any changes comming anytime in the near future Short Of MC10 Being Added because:

what has been stated before to many forumes creates confusion and is harder to maintain.

However I do still think that a MP3 Player forum should be added to keep up with handhelds. all other topics can be handled in the current forums.

when is support for MJ8 going to be dropped? and is that forum going to be closed is the question i have been wondering.

forum Improvements?

1. Highlight new private messages in red, a user told me he did not see a message i wrote him over 30 days ago because it really did not anounce it and did not look at the top of the screen.

2. when i select "mark all as read" should mark them as read, but then also dump you back out into the main forum home as it did before.

other than that i think the forum is fine as it is.

That takes us to the opposite extreme and often returns 0 results. A "find complete words only" option just seems like a useful additional option.

I know we probably don't want this thread to get crazy, but I always thought it would be good if the small sign-in fields at the bottom right of the page could be moved to the top. I often link directly to the MC9 boards and I always have to scroll all the way to the bottom to sign in...
