Crashing Media Server when navigating back on TiVo
« on: January 29, 2004, 11:06:36 am »

I posted a thread on the main MC board indicating some issues I was having with the latest version of Media Server and TiVo, particularly one whereby Media Server crashes repeatedly if you back out of the menus too quickly.

The error occurs everytime if I am doing the following:

1) Click through the levels to reach a view scheme and a song on the TiVo.

2) Play that song.

3) Quickly and repeatedly hit the left arrow to back out to the Media Library level (as if you were going to navigate back from the Audio section to the Advanced section.)

If you do #3 and happen to hit the left arrow before the TiVo completely redraws each level's screen (this isn't that difficult to do) you will see a Please Wait on the TiVo screen and then Media Server will crash on the PC.  Eventually, the song will stop playing and you'll get an error message on the TiVo as well.

See the complete thead for more details:

Does anyone else experience this behavior?

I have the exact same problem.  It was in the 9.x series I trialed, and now the 10.x series.

It happens in music or photo directories when you back out too quickly and quite frankly is a deal-killer.  I'm not going to purchase a product that will require my wife to run into another room and figure out how to restart a server if she accidentally clicks "back" to quickly.

Is anyone working on fixing this bug?  I'll be more than happy to test it because I know how to make it happen.  I'm not sure if collection size is related, but I have a rather large music and photo collection (~24k songs and ~12k images)

I have tried reproducing the problem here, and have not been able to. If you can
provide more details or a way for me to reproduce it, I'll fix it.

Unfortunately, it is 100% reproducible for me (and my wife who isn't even trying).  The key part seems to be navigating very quickly back such that the TiVo screen hasn't finished redrawing.

Using Delphi's debugger (instead of Dr. Watson), the error dialog on the PC is:
"Media Server.exe -- Application Error

The instruction at "0x004015c8" referenced memory at "0x00b401dc".  The memory could not be "read".

Click OK to terminate the program.
Click on Cancel to Debug the program.

If I hit Cancel, it brings up a CPU stack dump with a lot of assembly commands for the thread.  Would that be useful?

Are you testing this with many view schemes and/or a large library?

Thanks,

I've been out of town for the past few weeks, but I can still reliably get the media center to crash when backing out quickly.

Today, I looked at some pictures, backed out slowly and then played one song.  As I was navigating slowly to select another song near the end of the previous one, it crashed on me again.

Same error on the computer, requiring a restart of the media center.

What sort of debugging info do you want?

Could y'all post your system info? (Help->System Info... from Media Center)

Thanks,

No luck here, I noted a small difference: I tested with W2K service pack 4 instead of service pack 3. That's probably not it. If you'd like, I'll make a debugging version for you to try. This will take a while for me to narrow it down, after you run each version, you'll send me a results file and I'll make a new version. If you are willing, let me know.

Thanks.  I'd be happy to try and help track this down.  Feel free to send any files to install.  Let me know if you need my e-mail address or if you have that as part of my profile.
