v10 removing tag data
« on: March 07, 2004, 10:34:49 am »

My MP3 files has track numbers and total (album) track numbers, e.g.:

Artist: Abba
Album: Gold
Title: Dancing Queen
Track: 01/19

These were set using other tagging tools, e.g. Helium2/Tag & Rename/etc.

When I use MC to edit a track with this format it removes the total album track number, for example the above becomes:

Artist: Abba
Album: Gold
Title: Dancing Queen
Track: 1

We always save track numbers as a single digit.

We'll see if it's not too hard to have the MP3 plugin retain the album count when it exists.  Feel free to remind us.

Yes, this needs to be looked at.  I prefer the 0x/xx method.

What's frightening is that the track number is always written even if you don't touch the track number field, e.g setting a rating which is so easy to do now.   I have just checked my library and about 20% of my tracks (around 1000) have had their tags modified.

Matt, please let us know when this issue is fixed.   MC is unusable for tagging for me while this bug remains.

Rhino,
While we may fix it, it isn't a bug.  I believe we're following the standard.  Feel free to prove me wrong.

I think Jim is saying that the standard way to write Track # is a single digit therefore that's what get's written to the track # tag when you change any of the tag data in MC.

Why is MC changing the track number field when I am changing, say, a rating?   Don't you feel that preserving user's existing unchanged tags is important?

According to http://www.id3.org/frames.html it says:

 Track number/Position in set

Is one of the ID3v2 fields.   Will that do?

That doesn't actually say that the standard is to include both the track # AND the position in set.  The '/' could equally mean track # OR position in set which is what they probably mean for

Here's the spec:

http://www.id3.org/id3v2.3.0.txt

TRCK
The 'Track number/Position in set' frame is a numeric string
containing the order number of the audio-file on its original
recording. This may be extended with a "/" character and a numeric
string containing the total numer of tracks/elements on the original
   recording. E.g. "4/9".

Looks like MC doesn't follow the standard.
