MC11 and SAMBA
« on: January 25, 2005, 09:30:29 am »

I am having problems synchronizing my Library to an iPod, I think because the files are stored on a SAMBA server.

I am using MC11, initially 11.0.168 but now upgraded to 11.0.179, on a PC running Windows XP SP2.  The files are mainly MP3s, stored on a RedHat 9 server running Samba 2.2.7a-8.9.0.

Whenever I try to synchronize my 3G iPod to Media Center all the files get transferred, but they are created as zero-length files on the iPod.  The same thing happens if I try to syncronize to a file path defined as a handheld device.

I think that SAMBA is the culprit, because if I copy some of the files to the PC hard drive and import those into Media Center, they sync fine onto the iPod.

I see that the Change Log for MC 11.0.178 says "Fixed: MP3 files on a Samba server that didn't handle short filenames could fail to be imported or tagged."  This isn't my problem, they seem to import and tag fine - I have recreated the library a few times while investigating this and have been correcting tags as I go; but it did make me think that maybe SAMBA was the problem.

Has anyone seen anything similar or know how to fix it?

Thanks
Roger

Sorry, I can't help.

But I'm actually glad to see all the problems with samba. It will stop me from buying a network drive if that is the only capability offered.

I never much liked 'compatibility'. Ususally isn't.

There was a thread recently (last 3 weeks) that discussed Samba problems and user Alex B provided a link to a source of good information on the subject.

The title of the thread did not include samba.  A search for samba might find the thread.

I saw that thread, but it didn't offer any help.  That problem was with MC writing the files back to the server, this is with reading them from it.

For what it is worth, I don't have this problem with MC 10.

I tried this again last night using MC 10 and everything synched correctly.  Therefore, I assume it is an MC11 bug (or at the very least an "incompatibility").

I've got a WD 250gb drive on a Linksys NSLU2 network device (linux samba based) and I have no problems synching my ipod from it or doing anything else for that matter.  It's been totally transparent.
