mp3 encoder plugin causes crash
« on: March 25, 2005, 12:29:46 am »

I'm using Windows XP and have MC v10.0.  When I tried to download/install the mp3 encoder from the plugins page, the installer crashed.  I installed all other encoders on the page with no problems.  I tried deleting the existing mp3 encoder plugins in case they were corrupted, but the crash still occurs every time I attempt it.

I observe that it's only available under Windows XP/MC 9, not under MC 10...but I installed other plugins from the MC 9 page without issue.

Can you describe exactly what you're doing?  Step by step?

Are you using IE?

Anyone else see this problem?

Try an uninstall then reinstall.

Then, you can install the MP3 encoder by choosing it in Options > Encoding (or similar).  Do this instead of downloading it from the plugins webpage.

If you're still experience problems after that, just let us know.  Thanks.

Jim:
I simply go to the plugins:encoders page, and shift-click the download link for each plugin.  On the others the plugin file is recognized as a Mediacenter file, and I choose the option to open in Mediacenter.  Then the plugin installation starts and I click "Ok" a few times.  With the mp3 plugin I choose "Open with Mediacenter" and it immediately crashes.

I was using Mozilla, but that didn't seem to be an issue with any other encoder plugin.  I'll try with IE this evening (if I still have it somewhere).

Matt:
Do you mean uninstall and reinstall Mediacenter completely?

I'll look at Options->Encoders again when I get home, but I believe I looked at it the other night (I saw something to that effect when researching the problem on these boards) and didn't find a place to install codecs.

Thanks for the help.

Ahh... There is absolutely no need to do it this way, and possibly it isn't supported anymore (though Matt should probably check on this).

If you want to encode to MP3, you can install that plugin through MC itself (not using your browser).  Open MC, go to Tools --> Options --> Encoding.  Then next to Encoding For choose CD Ripping (if that's the type of encoding you want to set).  Then down below next to Encoder select "MP3 Encoder".  This will download and install the correct LAME plugin for your version of MC (if you don't already have it).  Then you can click on Advanced and pick VBR/CBR/Quality/Bitrate and all that good stuff.

If you also want MC to encode to MP3 when you are Recording Sound (from your line-input) or Converting Files you need to select those options under Encoding For (again, at the top of the window) and configure those separately.

I think because I had deleted the mp3 encoder entry earlier I was incapable of reinstalling it from the Tools->Options menu (it wasn't an option) until I uninstalled and re-installed the Media Center.  Having done that now, it worked.  Thanks!
